evening folks - update - 4-4-2011

so been chatting with k last couple of weeks about an idea he had a fair while back , basically when i first decied i wanted to go the tubular rear end route he said well in that case we'el fab a tubi engine bed for the front to match and pull the theme thru the complete underside of the car ,

so with that in mind i was dispatched on satday to see our good mate andy @ geronimo cages in hartlepool to get some suitable tube

so after a bit of measuring of the o.e item a bit of 38 mm 3mm wall tube was put in the bender and bent and the scrap bin raided for offcuts

so with that in hand and sunday off , went round this eve to make a start on it

excuse the poor piccys , i forgot me camera - better pics tomoz

pile of tubes and 2wd bed

peice of bent tube ( matched to profile of the o.e bed )

some centers worked out and scribed onto sheet to act as square grid for jig

now as it wasnt possible for the tube to be bent upwards at the ends and then brackets attached for the tca's , it was decided that the profile tube would be welded to two profiled end boxes ,

so fabbed and welded

note the angle cut in , this will incline the box upwards a tad and aid clearance in the travel of the tca , as will the cut out in the bottom . granted this end of the tca's movements minimal , but better to have the room

the crossmember mounts were matched to the o.e holes on the bed then a coped tube was put inbetween for strength , all tacked up atm will be cut off the bed and mounted in the jig tomorrowand finished welded when its all together ,

k is going to pop and get some machine time tomorrow on the lathe and machine up some bosses to be welded into the tops of the tubes before they bolt into the jig ,

so the box profiles where then welded to the tube

shot of what will be the underside of the bed where the tca will mount

so far really pleased with how its turning out so far ,

didnt have any box in for the jig , but going to pick it up tomorrow

just having a few ideas thrown about as to the best way to run the tie in tubes between the various mounts, got a good idea of which way we gonna go . also considering dropping the engine mounts slightly to lower the motor , but tbh it isnt nessacary really as its only a road car

just trying new ideas , make it a bit fresh , as i know of i aint seen one done tubular ..........

hopefully it makes the car that tad bit more unique and custom .

hope you like ,

beef and spesh

also means that as i referenced the piccys i had of the ls powered ecsos before starting that if i wanted to drop a ls v8 engine into the car , it would slide straight in without mods to the engine bed being needed lol

prob will do warren , but its made from 3mm tube ,

if weight was the main priority for constructing it and it was purely track based we would of prob dropped to a thinner wall tube ,

update to follow
