Saff underside restore
Well ive been stripping the rear of my car down for a month now.. I know im very slow.
Under the rear beam i found some rust on the box section, its not as bad as some i have seen and its also not right the way through. I was going to strip all the lose shite away and use a rust killer and the after cleaning the underside of the car go for a coat of black Waxoil. It that the best option or should i get that section cut out? I want it done properly.
Does anyone know if the rear beam mounts are still availble new as mine look like shite. I could also do with some new rear antiroll bar upright stablisers if they are still availble..
All the rear beam and trailing arms will be going to the powder coaters shortly, and thanks to cossymad and his bush bargains she should be nice and tight when she goes back together.
Here some pics:

My chassis rails are the same only slightly worse, I'm having to cut them out of a car in better condition and replace them as you can't get the sections from Ford anymore and i can't/ don't want to weld it.

Just a quick update, I have now repainted the diff and removed the bumper and fuel tank and pump brackets. I have a new fuel tank on order which I will get powder coated along with the suspension arms. I’m unsure of how to tackle the underside of the car though, what is the recommended method of treating it?
After reading various treads these seem to be my options:
1. Strip the underseal away and repaint with 2PK (not practical as the garage is integral and would stink the whole house out)
2. Strip the underseal away treat any surface rust and re-underseal (sounds like a good option but am a bit worried about rusting under the underseal and not knowing..)
3. Treat rust spots and paint with black waxoil.
Any other options I have missed?

I picked the suspension parts up from the sandblasters today and I can’t believe the finish of them. I thought some of these bits were fit for the bin but they look new now!!
I am going to get them powder coated in the New Year after the Christmas spend fest.

Cheers Tim
I think im going to be boring and get the main bits done black, I will get the springs done red and the fuel bracket silver. The new fuel tank should arrive soon and that will also be silver

I’ve just picked up the bits from the powder coaters and they look good!! Kind of wishing I had gone for a color now as it seems like loads of black.. May have to spray the underneath moonstone now to liven it up
I just need to finish of the drive shafts now and decide how to treat the underside of the car..

What a dirty messy job..So what do you think, Before
After
I cant believe there is no underseal at the back of the car its just finished in grey paint. Most of the rust is just surface thankfully apart from the box sections where the rear beam attaches. After cleaning at all back and striping all the surface rust away these holes are now two great big holes!! not sure how to repair these to be honest..
I’ve now hit white stonechip sealant now should I remove this or just clean all the muck of it?

What u using to clean the underside??
If i were u and had gone to all this trouble i would cut out all the bad metal and replace it. You could try and fabricate up some new steel or the easier option is to hit the breakers yard and cut some good sections out of a scrapper and weld them in.
Best of luck with the rebuild, mine starts later this month

Thanks for the reply RStoughy, yes i think the scrappy will be my best bet. I don’t think it will be easy to fabricate anything, as the rust is right around the built in threaded shaft where the rear beam attaches.
I just used wd40 and a nailbrush top remove all the crap, I wax oiled last year and WD seems to be the best thing to shift it. Oh and loads of rags

WD40 works for almost everything
Too bad you have those 2 "holes", looking at the rest of the topic (and your other ones) I think you'll find a way
Good luck and keep up the news...
(I get allready frightened thinking about what will appear when my underside will be done in a year or maybe 2 )

In my opinion, if it's rusty, cut it out, make up a repair and weld it in. If your not confident, having a go yourself, find someone who is. I would be surprised if you will be able to find those sections in good order on a breaker, as those areas appear to be common areas to rust. I had to make up similar repairs on 'tiny's' V8 Sapphire, along with a herd load of others.
Keep on, keeping on, it'll be worth it in the end

Thanks guys, I would like to cut it all out really as then I know its been done properly and shouldn’t come back. I wouldn’t want to have a go myself though as ive never used a welder before and don’t want to practice on my car I need an expert eye to tell me what’s best after taking a look. Trouble is I can’t seem to find anyone in the yellow pages either. I will try a few mobile mechanics’ tomorrow.
