Well... Today proved interesting...

When i picked the car up and drove it home it seemed somewhat thirsty - put the fuel monitoring gear on from work and sure enough found it to be VERY rich. Knowing it had been mapped at TOTD i thought there must have been something underlying and the previous owner confirmed it had been getting 300+miles to a tank - i was getting 200 or less!

Today explained a lot! I found the vacuum pipe to the map sensor had perished and hairline cracked so was creating a partial vacuum leak!

So - replaced all the vac piping throughout, checked the aquamist operation and did a few other routine bits.

I sent my OMEX ECU off for a firmware update and full inspection/healthcheck during the week and that all came back A-OK!

With the vac leak fixed and the OMEX back in - i put the fuelling gear back on and went for a test drive. Holds around lambda 1.00 under cruise conditions and the enrichment fuelling under boost is good - and i've found a 0.1bar boost increase

Scary to think that i'm possibly seeing a 50% increase in fuel consumption just by changing less than Ł1 worth of hose!

Glad i've got to the bottom of it as it was starting to bug me!

Rich - I used to be able to get 320miles to a tank on my ST170... IF i sat on the motorway at 80-85mph... all the time.

Well,

Bit of an update...

Found that on spirited drives i was falling out of the drivers seat so thought i'd stick one of my Corbeau Pro Series bucket seats in.

This thought happened one Sunday afternoon so i 'just' whipped one of the seats out and made a cardboard false floor so i could mock up some brackets.

Once i'd mocked up the false floor i put the seat on, marked out the seat location and had some 3mm steel plate folded to suit.

With that bolted in we had:

Soon followed by the nearly new harnesses from 'rst in progress/breaking'

Size: 86.6 KB

Lifeline 2kg fire extinguisher got fitted at the same time.

Also fitted my AEM Wideband Lambda gauge - had some carbon left over from when i did the nitrous bits:

So... this is the final result:

Will update more when i get time!

Looking good Will.

Do you find the gauges ontop of the dash to be in the way at all?
Saying that you are quite tall.

I've dropped the bucket seat quite low in comparison to a standard ST170 seat - a good 6 inches lower.

I can 'just' see over the top - but i will be changing that soon...

I let my mate drive it the other week - he got to the end of the road and got out and informed me he couldn't see where he was going

Cambelt tensioner shat itself on Saturday night - spannering away on it at the moment.

Funnily enough Ford weren't interested that their 4,012 mile old tensioner that sheared the locating tab off might have cost me a lot of money

See if i can get it ready for Oulton in 9 days time

Me too - got the side of the engine off at the moment - new belts and tensioners going on tomorrow and will compression check from there. Visually checking shows it to be 1 tooth advanced on the exhaust cam and 2 retarded on the inlet cam. That's with the crank pulley one tooth advanced from TDC (ironically positioned when i took the auxiliary pulley off...

Could really do without having to do a full head build this week

Whats worried me more is what's caused it - it's actually sheared the locating tang of the tensioner clean off. What's to say it won't do it again...

However - while the car is immobilised i've taken the opportunity to do a few other bits.

Redoing the entire oil breather system with aeroquip fittings and removing the flame trap etc.
Exhaust manifold has come off and will be heatwrapped with DEI stuff
Dipstick and power steering pipe are now covered with DEI fire sleeve.
Going to have a clean down of the engine and try to get to the bottom of a couple of oil weeps...

Got some brake bits ordered and needing collection lol.

I'm just glad it happened at 2000rpm cruising on the motorway rather than 8500rpm on Oulton Park

Yeah, me too mate!

I've actually got a full set of standard ST170 valves from when i did my monster engine build - so even if any of them are bent - replacement won't be a nightmare.

You still coming to Oulton as a spectator?

Gutted for you mate, doesn't sound too good. Having read this post i checked my map sensor tubing and it's cracked right by where it connects to the map sensor. Something i need to do along with getting a new actuator and afr gauge fitted in the near future.

So random but so amusing

Thanks Phil

Right - just landed at my mums back in Bradford after borrowing a Land Rover Discovery - 3 speed spack-matic with less grunt than an asthmatic quadraplegic...

Oh and you have to hold the wheel at 45 degrees to make it go in a straight line - but, it's transport

Thought i'd give you the photo's i've randomly taken with my phone over the last 48hrs - then it's bedtime as i'm up at 6am to try and get the head to the machine shop to be worked on while i wait

We'll start with the culprit:

Cambelt tensioner in question... - the locating tang has completely sheared off!

I got a brand new one (both from Ford - yet completely different... i demanded the one with the solid locating tab this time!)

Size: 62.6 KB

Name: 30092008145.jpg
Views: 620
Size: 92.5 KB

How things looked yesterday afternoon:
Name: 29092008129.jpg
Views: 575
Size: 82.0 KB

Decided that while i was waiting for the new cambelt and tensioner i'd take the manifold off and heatwrap it, meaning i could get rid of the OE heatshield that rattled its nuts off! Also meant i could firesleeve the power steering crossover pipe and the dipstick tube.

Name: 29092008127.jpg
Views: 661
Size: 72.9 KB

Manifold off and taped:
Name: 29092008128.jpg
Views: 634
Size: 67.0 KB

Heatwrapping started:
Name: 29092008130.jpg
Views: 680
Size: 57.5 KB

Finished!

Size: 64.5 KB

Size: 49.8 KB

Name: 29092008131.jpg
Views: 679
Size: 42.9 KB

Then this morning it got the full black silicon sealing treatment:
Name: 30092008134.jpg
Views: 587
Size: 57.1 KB

Name: 30092008135.jpg
Views: 569
Size: 77.9 KB

Then the cambelt and tensioner turned up - so i went to time the engine up...

Noticed something wasn't right and there was a bit of the cam missing!
Name: 30092008137.jpg
Views: 640
Size: 45.6 KB

There are normally 2 'half moons' above and below the slot - as you can see, the top right area is missing. Now, bearing in mind, nothing engages into that, so there is no load - i'm truly baffled as to what's caused that!

Decided to do a compression test now that a zetec thread adaptor had arrived before fitting the new belt/tensioner etc. and discovered 1 & 3 were down in relation to 2 & 4. Figured it was time to get the head off

Name: 30092008138.jpg

Size: 86.5 KB

Name: 30092008141.jpg
Views: 583
Size: 73.0 KB

So - the head is off, the valves are out and i've just dug these out...
Name: 30092008142.jpg
Views: 646
Size: 63.1 KB

These were the ones that i stripped out the ST head i built up for my monster engine so tomorrow morning they'll be getting seated, the valve guides checked and lapped in.

Then a refit tomorrow afternoon hopefully!

7 days till Oulton

Righty - just landed back in Blackpool - head has now had a surface plate hone just to make sure it's nice and flat without skimming anymore meat off.

All 16 valves have been changed and the valves lapped in and the clearances checked and ground where required.

Picked up the new head gasket and head bolts and so first thing can crack on refitting the head
