Default mk5 escort cab project

im not the greatest when it comes to engine internals etc, especially not on the old CVH engines but im trying to learn a bit just now!

anyways i got the car from some friends from escortpower.co.uk away down in northampton (800 mile round trip). the car had been sitting in a field for around 10 months with suspected water pump failure and then the full electrics had burnt out.

here's the pics from when i got the cab to now.

i always liked the mk6 dash more than the square mk5 so i wired up the mk6 dash into it.

since then, i've had the full interior loom sorted/rewired/tidied up, got everything that should be working to work. the inside has been sealed and ive stuck a mk6 carpet in for the time being.

this is the way the car was left for quite a while but recently ive started again...

the lockup LOL

completely standard ERST lump fitted and plumbed in (ie power steering back, water pipes connected) still to be wired up.
soon i'll be welding in a new n/s rear arch and tidying up the other rusty bits just to get it mot'd. then they will all be cut out and replaced.

a pic of my new intercooler beside the standard jobby and exhaust im chopping up to make a 4" straight thru.

next on the car was to fit the granada centre console, replace wishbones etc and get the turbo lump wired up!

got the full RST wiring loom wired up to the engine. need just one or two wee bits before i can actually get the engine running but its defo getting there!

the loom

loom wired up to engine. once ive got the car running then i'll be lifting the engine back out, chopping out the old loom and tucking away the new engine loom so it doesnt look as messy.

the new parts i bought the other day.

all those new parts fitted! new wishbones, track rod ends and ARB links. (will be going for decent lower arms when cash allows)

got the turbo and manifold out in the veranda just now to clean it up and make it shiny.

as i said im far from a mechanic, so im doing most of this myself as trial and error. the car is solid underneath and most of the rust seems to be cosmetic ie petrol cap and arches. i think i'll be cutting out the arch rust and fitting a wide arch kit.

plans are;
to get the car driving asap.
wide arch kit.
new interior.
new roof.
paint job.

andanything else that i'll need to make FF this year. soon i know, but looking hopeful!

up till now the car (including the RST engine) has cost me less than Ł350 so it's a cheap project as im doing most of the work myself. im hoping to run MFi until after the show season and when i can afford it to go for an EFi setup and go looking for around 200bhp with matching torque.

if theres anyone around the glasgow area ever fancies lending a hand then feel free, lunch will be on me and of ever i can then the favour will be returned!

nice one, id save the hastle and convert your current efi to run turbo now mate

mfi is pure shite, and a nightmear to wire up lol,
iirc, youd only need a frst inlet, map and ecu, and change a couple of wires,

nice project though

tbh mate ive thought about it, but i really wouldnt have a clue where to go with it. im happy enough doing as i am just now and trying to get to grips with it before i start fannying around with it lol.

i helped a mate fit an ERST into his mk4 cab so i know pretty much exactly how to wire up the MFi loom, as long as i get it running for this years shows then i'll be happy. can stick it off the road for the winter and work on converting.

is that all thats needed to change it to EFi though? i was thinking i would have to change to an FRST lump lol.. the lump ive gots a low miler and ran spot on before it was whipped out the donor car so would be good to keep a hold of it.

aye mate, pretty straight forward. hardest part was the rewiring of the clocks. but i made a guide to doing it if you're interested.

yeah, all you need is the fiesta inlet, you could even mod the mfi one, but not worth that hastle

easy to go efi imo

well spent the day at the car.

heres the part i was waiting for... turbo oil return stub.

cost me Ł17 from a garage in essex because ford dont sell em anymore (when they did it was Ł1.70 :getlost: )

anyhoo got it fitted along with the turbo and exhaust and got the car turning over from the key. sadly it wouldnt start and after a few attempts the starter looked as if it had fooked. removed it and turns out its only the solenoid, will get another in the next couple of days.

anyways, with the car turning over from the key i stripped down the turbo loom completely and removed everything that unplugged (taped up everything that didnt and i dont need), then labelled everything that was left so next time im out at the car im gonna strip the dash out and any of the current loom that i dont need and HOPEFULLY get the car running!

loom stripped and taped up.
