Great to see all the new people with their Christmas presents ![Top](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/smile011.gif)
The Nikon's can save in RAW and jpeg symultaneously, RAW format allows for much greater post processing of the image. If you're after image quality you'd be better off shooting in RAW and then converting the RAW image to a TIFF file rather than using a compressed jpeg.

Here's a little bit of a helping hand to some of the new Nikon users, it helped me when someone showed me this when i first got my D60 ![Big Grin](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)
When looking through the view finder you will see a chart like one below (i imagine canon is very similar) this gives you an idea of the available ambient light and how exposed the image is going to be.
![Name: Exposure.jpg
Views: 26
Size: 4.5 KB](https://passionford.com/forum/attachments/pictures-video-and-photoshop-forum/113303d1501884623-the-digital-slr-photo-gallery-thread-exposure.jpg)
The camera has a light meter built into it which checks the amount of light available and this alters the small bar on the chart to tell you how to adjust the shutter speed (exposure length) to get a correctly exposed image.
![Name: Exposureabc.jpg

Size: 7.0 KB](https://passionford.com/forum/attachments/pictures-video-and-photoshop-forum/113304d1501884623-the-digital-slr-photo-gallery-thread-exposureabc.jpg)
in the above 3 examples, if the shutter release is pressed the image captured will be exposed in 3 different ways.
(a) this image will be exposed correctly
(b) this image will be overexposed a lot
(c) this image will be underexposed quite a lot
And have a read of the sticky threads in the Pictures, video & Photoshop forum by Frog theyre great, very informative

![Red Faced](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_redface.gif)
*which metering do you use?
* also with AF area mode ive tried to use "single area " but it seems to want to use the right hand side sensor to focus and i cant get it to use the middle sensor
![Surprised](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/bigcry.gif)
also do you have NR on or off read mixed things about this?

As I had a bit of time over xmas I FINALLY got the D90 out of the box after having it 3 weeks ![Surprised](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/bigcry.gif)
Its my 1st dabble with SLR's since my Dynax 7000i and Praktica MTL3 lol
Just getting used to all the new settings they now have;
These were all taken on my 18-200mm straight off the camera no editing so not sure how much better I could make them!?

most of the pics in this thread are just amazingly clear.
is it not possible to get anything reasonably good with a compact?
i got a 10.2meg thing but the pics are horendously noisy!

Reduce the shutter speed, or if you cant reduce the shutter speed enough to correctly expose the photo, increase the ISO.
The reason i say this is the camera should already be set up to take the photo the way you want, with regards to the aperture/white balance/focal length etc
I prefer matrix metering.
I also like the AF set to closest subject, sometimes in dark environments the camera just wont autofocus and you have to manually do it.
Noise reduction and active D-lighting both off.
This is the reason people carry around bags full of heavy/awkward DSLR camera gear as compacts just dont quite cut it.
If im in any doubt, i prefer to slightly overexpose an image too, as its easier to tidy up with a bit of post processing compared to an underexposed image.
