Ya can change ya settings wiv a compact camera just go into settings and see whats there and just have a mess about tbh tho ya aint gonna get nowhere near the quality of slr hence the price difference get reading ya user manuals ya get wiv ya camera's to, they are very helpful

Lower ISO will give less noise, as the sensor will be less sensetive to light.

Yeah, no manual focus is perfectly normal for a point and shoot camera.

If point and shoot camera's were as good as DSLR's then nobody would be lugging piles of kit around to take the pictures they do, not when they could slip a little camera into their back pocket and set away on their travels.

TDEzzy85 Lovely pics One thing which woulve improved them but is well out of your control is the sky, just a shame there wasnt the odd light cloud floating around to add a bit of colour variety. That's the clearest sky i've seen in months!

iso does seem a little high wen ya get higher iso it tends to make ya pics grainy where as a lower iso will soften ya pics a bit, try and set iso yourself on low light shots try 100-400,also try ya f stops between f11-f16 aswell, your exp is -0.7 which tends to be under exposure, think red mentioned this earlier on try and keep it in the middle for correct exposure. good pics tho for first attemps

so can i leave my exp set at 0 if i just use the ````0```` graph and adjust the f number till its in the centre?

ye wish i had checked the iso now instead of leaving it on auto oh well all part of learning,

danneth - personally i would keep the camera in manual, use an aperture of around f12-16, set the ISO to 100, metering mode pattern, light source tungsten, exposure compensation 0, and adjust the shutter speed to centre the bar we weve been discussing in the viewfinder.

If the exposure was going to be longer than say 30 seconds, i'd increase the ISO, to allow the exposure time to be reduced.

Then when you review the image on the cameras screen, if the light trails are a bit faint, i'd increase the ISO to 200 and adjust the shutter speed and retry the shot.

Then retry it at ISO 400.

I always like to have all the settings in manual when shooting at night with a tripod, at first i used to take the same photo with a variety of settings to see what worked best, eventually things start to sink in it's just a lot to take in at first

sorry, forgot the camera shows them as incandescent and matrix but when you look at the info on the actual image file on the computer it says tungsten and pattern.

Photo's are pretty good by the way, especially considering youve just got your camera

EDIT : when i choose " incandescent " it asks me to set a value 0 or 3 either side of it - and + just set it to 0?

For a newbie Danneth your pics are fantastic. I'll be getting myself an SLR at some point, if only for the light trailing shots alone.

Some amazing photo's!!! I am a beginner and hope to get as good as you all!

Here are some that I shot this past year. I still have yet to learn photoshop. I have been using photoscape but doesn't let you control much. Also noticed that when I upload them to photobucket it has distorted the photo to make it have too much sharpening. I am now creating a Flickr acct.

Superb photos 89 SSP
I think my favourite is the remembrance wall for fallen men, with the star spangled banner and trees reflection

You got any more info on the leaking tomb in the last pic?

Thanks, I only hope to be as good as you guys are!

I forgot to post I am using the D40. I have yet to learn how to use it so I take all my photo's in auto.

The oil still seeps from the USS Arizona where the men are entombed in it still today since the attack on Pearl Harbor.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Arizona_(BB-39)

"As of 2008, 66 years after the explosion that destroyed Arizona, oil leaks from the hull still rise to the surface of the water. The Arizona continues to leak about a quart of oil per day into the harbor.[11]Survivors from the crew say that the oil will continue to leak until the last survivor dies.[12] Many of the survivors have arranged for their ashes to be placed in the ship, among their fallen comrades, upon their death and cremation. The Navy, in conjunction with the National Park Service, has recently overseen a comprehensive computerized mapping of the hull, being careful to honor its role as a war grave. The Navy is considering non-intrusive means of abating the continued leakage of oil to avoid the further environmental degradation of the harbor."

Here are from the memorial in Belgium Ardennes Cemetary.

no, you want to reduce the aperture, try the same shot again using a higher f number, eg f8-16, this will give you a larger depth of field, meaning more of the photo will be in focus.

Have a read of the sticky threads written by frog at the top of this forum, theyre great

great photo's i thought the same about photobucket thats what ive uploaded mine in, i dont suppose there are any photo account that let you upload in RAW format are there !?!?!
Get yourself a flickr account

You dont upload in RAW, you do all the post processing you want to do with the RAW file in Photoshop (or similar program), then save the image as whatever file format you like, eg TIFF, jpeg etc. TIFF is better quality as its not compressed like jpeg is but the file sizes are lots bigger!

Hey Red, I love your stuff and I hope to learn from you. I love that last one you posted of the light house!
