For "rat look" to work the car usually has some sort of theme/colour scheme etc. Like with alot of the VW's it tends to be german millitray theme or old style wood panelling withe white walls or something there abouts for example.

You have gone for old skool JDM style yellow lights, oversized rally mudflaps, and some sort of sleek all black paint overhaul. 3 completely mish mashed styles into one otherwise std car that has no stance or overwhelming difference.
Yeah it was clean on the out side but it was and is rotting from the inside out, hardly a devaluation when the car was never going to be sold again!

As for theme, the ones you mention above dont really float my boat, so im working my own theme! I think rat-look has moved on abit since the millitary and wood panelling!

What i have gone for is a break from the norm, ive used the matt black as a good base colour, yellow theme will run through the car, i only started this a week ago and im adding bits to it all the time. Give it another week and it will look better with more detail to it!

At the end of the day im having alot of relaxed fun with this car, which is the reason were all into cars isnt it, to have fun.

Each to their own

Do it!

ive spent the last 6 years(and counting) trying to get cars looking their best, i find it rewarding but stressful at the same time!

at the moment mucking around on the Escort is just so much fun and stress free, and you dont have to get it looking perfect (unless you want to)

its bloody cheep too! When ive finished the Escort, it'l be completly changed inside and out, yet it would of cost less than it did for me to buy my Mrs new handbrake/gearstick gaiter and handbrake/gear knob!

I also don't make my car look worse than it came out the factory. You seem to have succeeded in doing so though with the 80's spec french lights and other tat

Wel we've kinda got off on the wrong foot here,

ive got a passion for cars and i love performance cars, ive had alot of dealing with all kinds of cars over the last 6 years but ive always had a soft spot for the blue oval, if i had it my way id have a cossy powered transit! but my age is against me at the mo and im not a mug that'd pay more on insurance than they did for the car.

Ive got the Escort for work and for trips to sainsburys etc other than that at weekends out comes the serious car the Mrs Subaru where i ride shot gun, but hopefuly come the end of the year il be driving the beaut, so its all good!

Yeah I was using those themes as examples as there is obviously soo many more. I just dont see the "theme" for your car other than "Whats the cheapest mods I can do to my car right this second"

Also I think the fact that your are "adding bits to it all the time" suggests you dont really have a theme/idea and its not a project, its a car that everytime you have a bit of spare money you'll buy something obscure to stick on it. Projects are usually planned out to prevent things like that happening.

Also, rat look is supposed to be rotten on the outside (usually) not in the inside. Thats just an upcoming MOT failure that you are plugging money into. But like you said each to their own. Definately not my cup of tea.... by a long shot.

Oh your joking, is that going to FAIL the MOT! after all that shrapnel i waisted (Ł9.99 )

Wel i just see it as a quick change with little cash 'waisted', ive got a plan already in place, yet it doesnt really fit into any one theme. so lets not call it rat lets just call it my-look, cause your to cought up on how a rat should look!

By the way you seem to know alot about the 'rat' scene, you sure you dont have a secret fetish for it?

You purchased enough paint to cover a whole car and a set of wheels for Ł9.99? uh-hu

So if its not an attempt at rat look, why is it "esco-rat project"? and why are you posting pics in the RAT look thread?

I know alot about many things, that doesn't mean I indulge, enjoy or agree with them.

Yeah Ł9.99, for the yellow tint and stickers that are not shown, black paint was collecting dust in the shed from ages ago!

It fits into rat more than anything else, due to the fact it has a roof rack, matt paint and stickers, ive got an idea, when ive finished you can have the job of deciding on what the 'look' is!

haha love the fact that everyone who hates rat look has spent the time and effort to find a shite load of photos of ratty cars

i think this anoys you for one simple reason when a rat turns up at a meet or cruise or an owners club for toss pots who go and buy the exact same crap for their cars as every other cheque book modder does the rat gets more attention which is what i think anoys you

I have had one ratty ford escort a MK 6 was army theme ratted and called sarge here a few photos of him and perfectly honest dont care if you do or dont like it cause its different your all the same dont think you realise the time effort and thought that goes into these cars yea its cheaper than gettin a Ł1000 + spray job done i painted my escort for a about Ł15 for a tin of paint and 2 rollers for me and my mate to do it came out well and looked awesome got more attention then nethink else at cruises i went to

went from plain and boring

to this

as said already rat is more a lifestyle then a look for a car, im also working on a 306 now as the escort is now gone again car was cheap to buy and to be perfectly honest i would rat a skyline just to anoy the owners club and i bet would get alot more attention then a shiney gleaming one heres my 306

rat look is all about expressing yourself and having fun with what you got im expecting to either be banned or get a shite load of abuse either way dont care made my point either like it or lump it cause rat looks around to stay

I bet if you draw a massive cock on the side of your car and paint the words "I'm a massive C*NT" it would probably get even more attention? is that how it works? attention seeking?

Rat-look = I dont have any engineering knowledge or ability and I dont have the time or patience to make anything that is aesthetically pleasing so i'll stand out by driving a complete nail.

Probably would get attention but then again if i wrote c*nt on side or your car would get same looks dont you think

and just a little word to the quick to judge, ratters do all the work them selfs we dont pay garages for resprays or mechanical issues we fix them our selves and most rat cars will get thru MOT's so shows how much your think we balls the cars up and maybe its not aesthetically pleasing to you but we like our cars as much as you like yours but were not the ones telling you that your cars wrong we see the effort that goes into it, theres a difference btween making a car look wank and making a rat car

For a couple of posts i thought you were smart, very shallow of you to think just cause someone drives a 'rat' (different) car doesnt mean they've got no know how!
Wouldnt say im a know-it-all, but i know more than my Escort is revealing!

Can i just ask, what do your customers think of your car? i mean, surely wouldnt an escort van or transit have been better for business? I actually thought the car originally looked quite tidy, until you stove enameled it. It now looks like its been vandalised

Yet you try and rattle the cage by joining a forum to post on a thread that is totally disagreeing with what you do to your cars?

Its not always the case no, just the majority of the time. Look up the thread about that cambered mk1 golf. Then question his engineering know how.

not everyone is disagreeing some people have said they quite like the rat look,

and im more then happy to rattle the cage, your saying you dont like what were doing flat out at least we are open minded enuf to accept that people do what they like and we dont tell people or try and make people feel they are doing something wrong,

if we wanted to take away your cheque book and stop you buying stuff and working on your car in the way you wanted wouldnt you defend what you do

So I am not entitled to my opinion?

No, I wouldn't care what you said about my car, I enjoy it, I like it. If people don't then thats their bag.

If your going to be "different" and express yourself, you really have to learn to take the flak that comes with it.

....Which, if i'm not mistaken is the point of rat look, Its not giving a crap about conforming and going with your own flow. Like a kind of rebelion to the norm.

We do take the flak we just dont take it lying down thats all

just a flat out hate of rat look not accepting any of it or realising the effort or work that goes into it is just and insult i mean i could just as easily assume that everythink done to your car is paid for and youv had a mechanic do it, if you look thru some of the project threads or actually took the time to look at the rat cars and consider it is all done on a budget and by the owner themself think you will start to see how much effort goes into them and that we do genuinly care about are cars they may not look the best but they are ours and we do love them

My car has gone through several different stages and without spending much money. I was dubious of the ‘rat scene’ to begin with but I can’t think of another collective of car enthusiasts whose open minded approach allows for such swift changes in the looks of their respective vehicles.
I’m not here to pick a fight, I don’t expect you to like my car, I just wanted to make the point that rat-look as a scene might not be to everyone’s taste but I can certainly vouch for the vast majority of rat-look.com members being genuine, friendly and far from mechanically inept. (From my time reading many passion ford threads I know the same can be said)

Tidy? - Yes,
Same old? - Yes (all be it mud flaps n Green)

Seems to be going down wel at the moment, car is part of the branding, because you dont forget a car when it looks like this, even if you dont like it youl remember it.

Ive had vans including escort van, but only 2 seats and i need 3 at least, transit is a bit over the top for my line of work.

So taking an angle grinder to your bonnet and covering your interior in newspaper is "effort"?

I can appreciate the effort that goes into proper "rat - look" cars like the old american sit up a beg's and the one's where you can see the man hours put in. Doesnt mean that I think it looks good.

Also, do you appreciate the effort that has gone into these cars? You would have an open mind opinion on them?

Seems to be going down wel at the moment, car is part of the branding, because you dont forget a car when it looks like this, even if you dont like it youl remember it.

Ive had vans including escort van, but only 2 seats and i need 3 at least, transit is a bit over the top for my line of work.
ok fair point i just wondered, and shouldnt you be sorting the rust coming from the inside out as otherwise you will now fail your MOT and as soon as people start recognising your car, you will have to buy another one?

yeah it does take effort you ever grinded an entire bonnet off or paper mached a parcel shelf fuse box centre consol sub box and sun visors before takes a good few hours ok it may not be taxing work but it takes time to do them and also need to buy the glue paper brushes etc there is more goes into it then you think we dont just buy stuff and attach it

and you found barry boys.com then well my opinion on the first two is i can see what they are tryin to achieve all be it abit abitious with the cars they have gone for but thats not their end result is it dont think would look great but i can see there effort and it probly took alot longer to do then you think personally would drive either of them tho but thats the point im not driving it so couldnt give a toss what it looks like

and the corsa is ok id have it spray it alloys and sell it to a local chav who wants a pre made boy racer car

maybe you should try it would see the hours that go into these cars then and how much we put in to them - before being so quick to assume we dont put effort thought or have any know how about cars

the key thing with rat is making it look ratty good rusty etc but just the right amount to get thru MOT's
