90% of them arent even rat look, just wrecks!
i dont see the thing with having a nice car, like that mk5 golf, and sticking an unpainted bonnet on it for it to go rusty, fair enough have a car with a cheap simple crappy paintjob and a big engine but most of them are just pants

shitloads of them are nowhere near rat look and not even trying to be rat look.
i got no problem with rat look as long as its genuine, many look WAY better than most dickheads big money cars.
but spending LOADS of money to make your car look cool but tatty, as thats TOTALLY missing the point.
rat cars should be genuine knackers that are still cool, not some big money car thats mint but deliberatly made to look shat.

Deliberately ratting a car just looks contrived... especially when the engine bay and wheels are sqeaky clean.
I love genuinely battle scarred well used cars (as all of mine conveniently are ), if you have to spend time in making your car look abused you're missing the point.....
For its first year on teh road my MK3 Escort is going to get a 300+ BHP build going in it and nothing done to the 24 year old bodywork...... which is currently covered in dents scrapes and moss

was cool about 10 years ago, as was the whole V dub scene.
its kinda morphed into a more status quo kinda scene. it used to be the vw scene that came up with all the ideas. the euro and rat look at two which have been over done too the extreme. especially with the likes of twat mags like redline and the likes euro looking all kinds a cars.
spose you will like my old 1949 split screen beetle then.
this is how i bought it. spent 2 years restoring it
i sold it in january, and this is how it looks now (less the white walls)
and my old 72. which i bought at 14 for Ł450, restored and sold at 17 for Ł3000. Was my first ever respray! it still drives around sudbury now.

sold the car back in 2001 i think? always kept an eye in the dvla records, to check it was still taxed.
was doing a job in sudbury/ chilton about a month or so back, and for some weird reason i felt this instinct to look up and across to the road, and fuck me side ways, there was my old orange bug driving past, had to take a double look to check number plate!
my misses also has seen it around halsted, little mapelstead and castle hedingham. and it was parked out side "little india" in mapelstead a few weeks back, use to be "the cock" pup before it was a indian!
keep trying to track him down, id love to buy it back, i have big plans for my next project once the es cos is gone!!!!

the "rat look" has been around since the 50's. started in america in small hotrod/vw circles.
young lads 16 years old, only cars they could afford were old heaps or their parents old cars.
being young like we all were that age we wanted to personalise our cars (tis no different today to the pricks with neons and subs ect in shite cars). All the lads could afford was a nice set of wheels and accesorise the car.
This is where vw rat look really took of in the late 50's ,as vw was, back in the day untill the late 1970's the biggest supplier and target of aftermarket accesories. from roof racks, fridges, drinks coolers, basic air con window units, aerials, exhausts, bucket seats.
this was a basic trend, which was bought out of necessity rather than fashion. as no one could afford a 2-3-4k paint job
sadly tho now with the somewhat main stream revival of the vw scene, its now become a fashion statment, and people are purposley "shiting up perfectly good vehicles".
and its crazy. at a show last year i saw 3 split panel buses (1950/60s) which easily sell at 15-20k. and people have baremetaled them, or even worse spent 2k on a paint job then wet n dried the high areas to give a worn look.
for example my 1949 beetle i sold this january, i had 90% restored the chassis (apart from finishing the cable brakes) the bare shell mounted on it in primer and a box of rare parts (2 indicators cost me Ł450) and a 1954 engine. sold it for Ł7000, was only advertiesd one day!!!!!!!!!
basicaly its twats with too much money, who listen to "indy rock" and think its cool to be hippy and wear those stupid thin jeans!

I like some of the old campers with proper 'patina' as they call it in Custom Car mag but you can tell which ones have been made to look like that. Pointless imo
