thinking of getting a crosser what is best ie, reliablity, power.dont know to much about these,do 2 strokes need engine rebuilds more than 4 strokes.any help would be great.iam not after one for racing just for local track and feilds.

i'd go for a 4 stroke single cylinder if its just for a bit of green laning.

2 strokes are easier and cheaper to work on if they go wrong. Also a well driven 2 stroke will beat a 4 stroke of double the cc.

4 strokes do sound the dogs bollocks though and have the advantage of being easier to ride due to their progressive power and better traction with the way the power is delivered.

My mate is going 4 stroke when we sell our RM 250 but im sticking with a 2 stroke.

Also 2 strokes wont need regular rebuilds if they arnt driven flat out everywhere, which you wont be on a track unless your shit hot but might be if your just straight lining it round a field. Even if they do need a rebuild you can get rebuild kits cheap enough and do it yourself.

Id go 2 stroke if its track action and bit of field. But four stroke if its road legal and going to be flat out everywhere

Chalk and cheese. Totally different depending on how and where you ride and what you actually want from a bike.

I back up what Sunil_FiestaRS1800 said above (apart from id say a 2 stroke will be around on par with a 4 stroke twice the engine size in my experience)

It also depends on what tracks and/or what terrain youll be riding on. Different bikes suit different tracks/terrain/riders.

As with any bike, its all down to how you use what you have to its maximum potential. A well riden 125 can beat a 250 round many tracks. for example.

Ive always been a die hard 2 stroke fan, and used to race in motocross 125 and 250 2 stroke, and know for a fact id be quicker than i would if i were on a 4 stroke 450 on track.

Having said that, ive recently bought a road legal WR450 4 stroke. Not using it competitvely this time round, but for green laning. There as reliable as you like if you keep on top of the oil changes and air filters, whether riden hard or not, so id say go for a 4 stroke if not racing.

Only way to tell what will suit you is to have a go on both though and see what you think.

had both
i'd go back to 2 stroke if i got another crosser
torque's much better on a 4 stroke
but 2 stroke more fun
and it'll start much easier than a 4 stroke when you ditch it in a corner and get winded(bad experience)
either way brilliant fun no matter what you get
cunt i want another bike now i'm talking about it

for me its 2 stroke all the way i have a yz 125 an my mate has a crf 250 riden it a few times an always feel dissapointed when i get off it like said above has plenty of torque etc.but a crosser should always be 2 stroke more fun lighter less hassle when they do break down an also much easier to throw about.if looked after will last jst as long as a four stroke plus the feeling when the powerband kicks in is quality and they are cheaper to buy aswell

As already mentioned if you get the chance ride both an see how you get on , ive owned multiples of ea cr 125's kx 250's / crf 250's , yzf 450 , crf 450 & currently a yzf 250 im quite happy ridding either i went for the yam yzf this time round because in my experience decent 4 strokes are so much more reliable / easy to start / no mixing fuel up etc , a 2 stoke may well be alot cheaper to fix because the engines are a lot more basic but the 4 strokes last longer imo between engine re builds, both models need proper maintanence though as there race engines at the end of the day and will cost you a small fortune if niglected ... ( im sure you will have plenty of fun which ever you choose

p.s if possible buy the newest bike you can afford and the one thats done the least amount of hours ....

Just in case your not aware mate, if you want one for the green lanes and byways, it will need to be road registered and fully road legal with tax, mot, insurance etc.

Thought id mention that as many people dont realise.

Basically, its using old roads/tracks that are no longer used by general traffic. It can vary from being a single track a few feet wide, to wide rocky trails, through streams, rivers, woods, etc and often VERY deep mud as we found out again a few weeks ago. Excellent fun if you have a route planned out and dont know what to expect. But as i said you need to be FULLy road legal as they are still classed as 'roads'.

I have had a few of both, best 4 stroke was my 04 crf 450,some one had spent nearly 4 grand on it.Was really quick and smooth, but if you gave it a fistfull it was straight in the air.I am only 5ft 8" so it was a bit tall for me and heavy.Got 2 07 cr 250s now selling one soon. For maintenance costs,2 stroke every time. You could blow a 2stroke to bits and repair it just for the cost of a top end rebuild on a 4stroke.Power wise 250 4stroke equivelent 125 2 stroke,450 4stroke=250 2 stroke.hope this helps
