Default anyone on here that knows about stolen recovered cars?

anyone on here that knows about stolen recovered cars?

i ask because i went to see a mk5 escort he dident have any vin number on front of car and also no ground off chassis number, he said the car is stolen recovered.

i thought somethink seems not right?

he did say theres a number stamped under bonnet to say its stolen reovered the number begings with : Sabt0329xxxxxxx

does anyone know if they stamp under the bonnect when they are stolen recovered? or what that number mean?

i even phoned dvla and gave them the reg but thay say theres no police traces on the vehical so the registration seems to check out with dvla? however i asked them about the staped number under bonnect and they wouldent disscuss that they said they cant tell me any more info

anyone advize please?

thanks

it should have a chassis plate on the dash that you can see through the windscreen or one on the slam panel, if its had the id all removed it should really be a Q plate.

with no proper ID & a incorrect running gear that should be on a Q plate.
bid him Ł500 on it & then buy another similar to put the running gear in

My 3 door was stolen recovered minus it's vin, the police were satisfied it was mine, provided me with a covering letter too. They also stamped the Vin and the date on my strut top mount too, i then bought a Vin and paint tag from Tags UK in Notts, so it is possible!

that IS the way they do it on some stolen recovered vehicles when they CANT identify the original id (stamp a new number on chassis leg or on a plate in the flap where the original used to be by the drivers seat)!

No, No, There's something very wrong here!! Do I understand you correctly, that the chassis number had been ground off ??
Sounds very much much like an insurance fraud job,to me.

I've done lots of 'write offs' in my time and if it's only a 'stolen recovered' it should still have it's original tags on it !! Grinding the I.D numbers off, tells me it's WAAY dodgy!!

Don't touch it with a barge pole !!! It will end up causing you all sorts of greif !!

I don't see how he would keep the original reg number if they have allocated another VIN but I don't know about it for sure.

The SABT bit means the number has been issued by the Dept of Transport. My next three characters are VRO showing it as coming from a Local Vehicle Licencing office, identified by the next three digiits. The next number shows the year of issue (mine is 0 for 2000), and the last 6 are the unique ID number.

I had quite a few stolen recovered vehicles when I was in the UK and yes the no. is correct and has to be stamped on the shell somewhere on the drivers side front (normally the strutt tower) but these days will as far as i am aware carry a Q reg only.
These cars are Q when the original id is lost or removed while being rung.
These chassis no are aslo given to cars built from parts. Kit cars etc
The guy if genuine should be able to show the DVLA letter instructing the chassis no to be stamped by a garage. You should also ask for the receipt showing who did it. But should be on a Q plate
If the vehicle is recovered and is still traceable to its original id / reg by chassis no or engine no then it retains its reg and chassis no s
I know this because I use to do cars for insurance companies
ie when recovered by police if identfiable they become property of ins. company who normally want them back on orginal id to get top $ when sold to recoup there pay out.
I don't think it has changed but I have been out of country for couple of yrs now so may have.
