what do you guys think of the 1.8t vw engine? i know they can be tuned to 400bhp ish on standard internals but other than that i don't know much about them?
what are they like in day to day use? running costs? performance?
i've had a fair amount of experience of the diesel engine so know where i am roughly, almost 100% relaible upto 200k and beyond if looked after properly with enough torque to up-root trees aswell as exceptional mpg.
but the petrol is cheaper to buy in the first place and my heart says it's a no-brainer, petrol turbo every time!
i don't do mega miles either so aslong as the 1.8t does 25mpg or above on short journeys i'll be happy.
what'd ya reckon?
p.s. when i say tdi i'm talking about the 110 engines, not the 150 gt tdi!

Ive got the 1.8-20vt engine in my ibiza. Get 30mpg on long motorway runs at best.
Around town and short runs dont see much above 22-25mpg, without giving it beans
Very easy to get good power gains for little $$$ though. 2k for bolt on bits will push the power to ~240hp

Dad's got a GT-TDI......Very good overall car. Only thing about the Diesels is that they hit the limiter (which is only five odd grand) before you have time to rest your left foot off the clutch. LOL

I have a 150 Gt tdi on offer to me at an amazing price - some people have said things about reliability - any one know any issues? Something about stressed turbo failing and taking other parts common to the oil supply?????

not heard that i know the clutchs will fail quickly if you remap them.
Have a look hear www.uk-mkivs.com i think or it might be co.uk

I have a golf GTTDi, it has been mapped and produces nigh on 190 bhp, the torque is through the roof and you can turn on the cruise control at 120 mph (at Brunters...LOL) and it will roll at 45 mpg...!!
Diesel for me.............

I have a passat 1.8t. Best mpg I got was last week 49.9 mpg I was going very very easy though. You can get 40mpg on a run doing 60 but speeds above 70 brings it down a bit to 30-35mpg. Town can be under 30 but I spose it depends how you drive. Its a nice engine apart from pulling away it doesn't like no boost. Its pretty quick but thats compared to an orion ghia. It doesn't really throw you back in the seat its more of a whisk you along feel.
Hope that helps

has anyone driven both cars out of interest?
the only person with a 1.8t i know of got rid after about six weeks due to expensive running costs..
& which ever i get, if either as i'm looking at a gti-6 atm LOL, i won't be using it to dawdle at 60 cos thats where the best mpg is, it'll be mostly around town, hardly ever getting upto temp the the occasional couple hundred mile trip at the weekend every now & again.

Ive driven both.
I have both a Golf GTI 150bhp turbo (petrol) & a Golf GT TDi 130bhp.
The petrol is ok nothing special, fuel consumption is average, like what was already said, around town 22-25 mpg at best. I havent driven one chipped and I guest like all turbo cars, it would make hell of a difference
The Derv on the other hand has so much low down grunt its great fun and with it returning 48 mpg its very cheap to run. Again I havent driven a chipped one but have talked to ppl who own them and say them are simply amazing.
It all depends on your requirement, as I am tight arse, its derv all the way. Great fun, amazing fuel economy and they last forever. ie last week i was driving down the m4 @ circa 85 and the derv average 51.6 mpg Shame your not local as you would be more than welcome to come and test drive both.
Heard stories about the 150bhp dervs have reliabilty problems, but unsure why or what fails.

cool, thanks for your opinion
i too have heard general reliability problems with the 150 but haven't worked on enough to see one myself. i do know they're best to be driven hard as siezed turbo vanes [VNT] is very common with cars dawdling around town on a regular basis. this applies to all the PD engines and some of the otheres depending on year.
