...because I need a bent spanner to get the back two bolts holding the turbo to the manifold.

Is there a something i can buy off the shelf or do I need to bend a spanner myself. Don't fancy it that's all, no access to a vice so i'm likely to do myself damage and still end up with a straight spanner

Any suggestions?

you can buy bent spanners yes, i'm sure i've seen them in halfords so you should be able to get some tomorrow.

remove the alternater top bracket it makes life easier or even the alternator itself.

Im sure the rally teams used to be able to change them in 15 mins between stages... fook knows how!

Trip to halfords tomorrow & take alternator off see if that helps.

They made a quick release modification to the turbo flange.

I use Short spanners and a lot of fiddly angles with my wrist! lol

its only that One nut on the back of the turbo by the head
thats the probelm really. but i managed ok

This is on a 4x4 saff, i cant see how you'd get in let alone get any leaverage?

I used a cheapo spanner, big hammer and a kerb. Resulted in one nice bent spanner that worked a treat !

At least you are having a go at doing it

It is fiddly but you will get their in the end.

Don't forget your New Oil Feed Pipe, you don;t want your new turbo sezing up.

Just been to halfords, not that hopeful but gonna go have another go.

They didn't sell bent spanners, just moon spanners that won't do the job. Bought some adjustable head job, might do it. Also got a cheapo 17mm to try to bend if that fails.

To those who've bent them before, did you have to heat them up?

as u say though, all u need is a cheap 17mm spanner and a vice and a long length of tube to slide over it - you will end up donig yourslef a mischief trying to do it with a hammer

i changed mine ... bastard of a job to do very small spanner for the back engine side on (or the bent style) had to take the exhaust off the turbo on mine

use a heat gun or blow torch or even a cooker to get the spanner hot then bend it .halfords are best as they bend back ok.also helps if you grind down spanner a bit

Eagle, can't follow that link. Do you have a pic of this 'small' spanner. A mate of mine has bent a spanner for me, I'll have a go with that tonight, but if that fails might need a short one.

when i took my mates off i didn't have any such trouble??? only took bout 25 mins?






....thinking about it i removed the metal water pipe that runs along side the head under the turbo,and the exhaust downpipe ( this may help? ) obviously then you'll need to refill your engine coolant

The saga continues... still can't get that last nut.

Had enough for tonight, must have spent about 5 hours in total on this fooker now!

Tomorrow night, the manifold is coming off ... gotta be easier

There's 2 studs missing that i can see anyway so gonna try to get those fixed at the same time.

What a nightmare this is.

I'll keep ya posted on my (lack of) progress... Thanks again to all who've helped out - great bunch of people on this forum

took me about 6 hours all in to swap standard to a t34 .. never done it before ... so i was happy .. oh and be carefull when you take the water pipes off as the copper type washers have a tendency to leak .. apparently you can heat them up and tap em flat .. or goto fords and get em for 27 p each ....

There is a double open ended spanner available for 4x4 turbo's
Ask Mr snapoff if you can't find one ?

Can't see anything on the snap-on site - I guess that's what you meant?

Another thought just crossed my mind. What if I cut a 17mm spanner down and get someone to weld a socket onto it so i can put an extension bar in. That should work shouldn't it?

I don't know if you cracked this or not, but I just removed my T3 last night.

I took the alternator off, and the compressor housing off the core. I managed to then get at all of the bolts with a standard 17mm open-ender

Took 2 hours absolute max, and I'm a methodical worker

Just waiting for my mate to finish machining the exhaust housing quick-release stylee and then I can fit my new blower

I took my turbo off the other day took me an hour to remove and just over hour to refit...

DIDNT take off alternator or anything, just boost hoses, didnt even take out the oil return pipe

I used 3 17 mm spanners, a std 17mm short snap-on, a angled head double open ender snap-on and the one below for the back nuts...

As you can see its bent slightly (in 2 directions) plus for clearance I ground both ends down.... quite a bit LOL..





Its fiddly but you just have to keep switching spanners on each turn thats all..

this is the only one i needed - as as above, only hoses to come off - i think i took the comrpessor housing off to re connect the oil return though - as with my big fat hands i cant fit them in the gap

Ah compressor housing will make it alot easier, I didnt remove that ... I too have rather large hands

once you have done the comp housing once - it is v easy to get off - those 6 lil stubby bolts and away it comes and you can see the light

Aye I did strip a turbo coule years ago and replaced seals etc... Only on my new warrantied turbo I didnt fancy taking it apart
