If you DO know about em...

Does what ive typed below make sence to you, or do i need to ring em back as ive got summat wrong

Getting some cams done for the GTR, they re-grinding mine.

Rather than just make bigger shims (cams operate directly onto the shims on GTRs) they said it would be better to add something underneath the shims, less mechanical load/wear/losses or summat by doing that.
That make any sence? I forget.

They said they needed to know the diameter of the shims, fair enough.
The diameter of the valve stem, fair enough.

But the final one maybe im confused. Think he asked how far the valve stem protrudes above the collars.
That make sence?

Hope so

Lee- If i dont get the exact answer by tomorrow morning (hopefully robbie in NZ will gimme the answer later when they wake up down there!) i was planning to ring Martin, yup

Matt- Eh? Like said, they dont want to fit big shims for some good reason i dont understand, they want to do something a bit more flash, again for reasons i dont really understand

It was early and it was noisy, I shouldve listened more
Easy to ring back n sort it, just wondered if what I have said makes sence to the experts...

PS

are liners solid lifters to begin with like Teg's or is this an aftermarket conversion?

If its aftermarket you need to change the cam profiles as they will have excessive initial ramps for opening the valves as they arent designed to take up clearance before opening!

If its collets then it sounds like he just wants to know much of the valve sticks out past those two little semi cricle bits you put on the top of it to retain the spring in place.

These bits:

Thats it, he said how much the valve stem protrudes above the (something) and he mustve said collets. Huzzah, we seem to be getting somewhere

Just measure it with a feeler gauge, he wont even need to know particuarly exactly, nearest couple of thou will be perfectly adequete

just rest feel gauges on top of the caps till you find one that feels about level with the head of the valve, jobs a good'un

I cant imagine that it varies enough to matter from one car to the next if yours is on standard valves and collets?

I know, a friend of mine has this problem the other day.

He was servicing someones GTR and it said on the receipt
"Valves, check clearance, 10 thou"

They thought it meant that they had to pay to clear the cheque they wrote for the valves and gave him 10 grand extra to cover it
