Tiff, WHERE ARE YOU??!! UPDATE IT GETS WORSE!! GRRR!!
I neeeeeeed your help!!! PMSL
I am trying to get a brass fitting to seal into a Side-body style tap. It is a Brass tapered fitting with no seating, so it it sealing by virtue of the fact that it is tapered.
There are 2 of them.
I have tried it 5 times now. One seals perfectly and one doesn't.
I have tried varying amounts of PTFE tape and have tightened it until it stops.
What else can I use? Is there any kind of sealing compound that is realible (is it is going to be behind tiles!)??

Yup, use Boss White Just make sure it's the (more expensive) type that you can use with potable water and not the cheaper one that is only for central heating. I use it and never had a leak since with compressions.

Right, I have just taken the fooking thing apart as it was leaking from BOTH sides now. The side that was OK obviously decided that it didn't like continually being disturbed!!
Anyway, I have learnt 2 things, 1 positive and 1 negative.
1. The fitting could be bottoming out as there is a part of the casting that it could hit after the thread. I considered cutting the fitting down slightly to get it to go further along the taper, although......
2. I aren't convinced that the fitting is tapered. Take a look.....
Ignore the nut, thats for the other side of the fitting.

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
how many times did you wrap thread tape around the thread (no 2)....about 10-12 should be enough......
also that thread looks a little bit crossed threaded....
there looks as though there's a rubber o ring missing on the end of the tail (no 1) which seals up against the face of the other fitting (i'm assuming its a radiator valve )if the seal is not there you should be able to use thread tape on this as well.......
if the other end isn't sealing up with tape and a jointing compound then the radiator may be split....
hope this is of some help.....

Is it really OK to go round that 10-12 times with PTFE tape??!!
I just went round perhaps 6-8 times. I can't see how it can be right to rely on SO much tape!! But then I am not the expert!
As for the other end, it is a kind of Compression fitting. There isn't a seal to go in there. It's not shown in the parts listing. That end seals fine.
By the way, it isn't a Radiator. This is what it is...
It wasn't cheap either. Around Ł250.
This is the actual fitting....
This is where the problem join is (indicated by the arrow).....
I have some fantastic Sealer that we used to seal my Inlet Manifold, but I assume I can't use this type of sealer on a Domestic water application?

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
10-12 times is fine....i always leave the first/second thread bare (no tape )so i can get the thread started off alright...should be ok......you dont really want tlo be putting too much shite and crap (or any jointing paste/hemp ) on the thread or inside the valve ...cos it'll only end up inside the mixing valve.....
(another thought....does that valve have non-return valves ...if not you'll have to fit them somewhere on the pipe work along with isolation valves....)

u should have a rubber O ring on the non threaded end really in that groove
and are u sure ur putting the tape on the right way ?? 10 -15 at least if not get some gas ptfe that should fix it nice and thick 3-4 wraps always seals
or as above some lsx or instant gasket pretty much same stuff and works very well the ptfe

I have just spoken to the manufacturer, John Sydney, well Bristan, who have just informed me that this is a known problem and that they have since changed the design!!
What fooking good is that to me now I have spent a whole fooking day trying to get the fooker to seal??
FFS.
They are replacing it, but I now have to wait for them, then drive 15 miles to the place I bought it from to pick up the replacement, then drive 15 miles back again.
I feel like liberally coating it in Vaseline and inserting it up their arse. Sideways.
