Default E30 wheel bearing replacement - done now - big up aRSe

Need to do one on our E30, but im not anywhere near the car to look at whats invovled at the moment.

Anyone on here done one?

I tried asking on the e30 forum for details but the closest i could get to a detailed explanation of how to do it was:

take it to a garage
write out a cheque
drive car home

So i thought i would have a go at asking on here as we've actually got people on this forum who *shock and horror* are prepared to work on their cars themselves

Your first bit of advice was probably pretty sound, it's a shitty job, i ended up making/improvising a puller/compessor to do the job, which should make doing the job alot easier! Which you are welcome to borrow. Give me a call, i'll talk you through it, i wouldn't want you to push the centre of the bearing out on installation as per the 'Haynes' book of lies, as i did 'Midnight Motors' for a second replacement . I advised someone of this who was doing the same thing on the front wheel bearing on a 4x4 Audi, he came round later that day and confessed he did the same thing

What a twat of a job that was!

Massive thanks to aRSe for the loan of the appropriate puller.

Even with that it was a complete bitch to get the bearing out, would have been impossible to just beat it out!

In the end to get it to budge we had 23 stone of mongo hanging off 2 foot of spanner on the puller to preload it, then we got it nice and hot to expland the arm a little, and finally encouraged it to then move by beating it with a hammer.

Not a pleasant job at all.

Took us about 3-4 hours in the end!!!!

I should have got a picture of all the bits of the puller and replacement drift, it looks like the sort of tool Mad Max would use

Funny that, I was just explaining my cossie heater and thermostat problems to an M3 owner here in the office and he had a blank look on his face...

Bought it off a mte of mine. He had it up for sale and i was bored of the Corsa gsi. I bought the corsa in the 1st place off the same guy i bought the vectra off, so we came to an arragment where i gave him the corsa plus money for the vectra.

Corsa was fucked (he knew this) so it seemed like a good deal. Now i fancy something of the diesel varitey because of my mileage at work

Get an LPG car mate.

I bought an old snotter of an R reg mondeo last week.

190 miles of 80mph motorway driving = Ł12.87
120 miles of mixed driving = Ł7.32

I dont think the freezing cold weather and the fact we were on the driveway helps much mate.

See you in a couple of weeks for the next one, we can test your thoery it will be quicker now we are more familiar with what we are doing

I think getting a load of heat on far sooner would have saved a lot of time!

Amazing ain't it? You really have to take advantage of this while you cqan because when it gets popular there's no doubt in my mind it will get heavily taxed by those government bastards

Think I'll be applying for a loan at the middle of march to finance my next vehicle (and probably some of my ring trip money )

They have put caps for the next few years on what rate it will be taxed at, but wouldnt be anything new for them to go back on it!
Bunch of bastards!

will probably be in the mondy this weekend but i think you may need to drive as well, as looks like by the time we get to your place there will be six of us!

You mean the puller worked, i've been waiting over a year to trick someone into using it

"Worked" is a bit generous

But it helped.

The drift for the new bearing worked an absolute treat though

will let you have it back in a few weeks if thats ok, as want (well not want of course, but feel i should, lol) to do the other side too first just in case its worn as well.
