Default moral dilemma...

ok, so my car insurance is coming up and i have a bit of a problem. i live in kent, my car is parked in the garage in a secure mod patch la la la....

but for less than half the year i have it up in birmingham, on the road... but in a quiet street.... its got an alarm and a full steering lock etc and the stereo is never left in teh car and its always parked outside my house...

now, fully comp it would cost me £300 extra to insure it in birmingham compared to kent. now i class myself as living in kent. i realise i do have it in birmingham a lot, but it seems a huge amount of money for the difference...

now do i risk it and god forbid something happened claim that i had it up for the weekend (which is perfectly feasible) or do i pay the extra £300? taking it up to just under £1000...

help....

You live in kent, so insure it there...

If anything happens, you were "visiting a friend in birmingham"

A bit naughty, but they scant us for every penny anyway, so fuck them.

Aye, insure it for Kent. Besides, what happens if you insure it for Brum and something happens in Kent?

Although given that i blieve most insurance companies are currently running at a loss and hence keep having to put prices up to stem the tide, doing so will obviously put all the rest of our premiums up a tiny little bit extra

Running at a loss? Thats news to me? i can't possibly see how they can be losing money though?

"Claim culture" to blame i presume?

its cos birmingham is seen as an area where the car is more at risk, so i presume if something happens in kent then... i dunno thats a good point? hmm...

the only reason that the car is more at risk is from vandalism, its not that im more likely to crash in birmingham, and i have a fair bit of security on my car... but if i did crash it in birmingham then they will put 2 and 2 together and then i may end up with them not paying out as i have to declare that im at uni and it was insured in brum last year so they know im up there...

other thing to do is go TPF&T... which takes it down to £700... which is still £50 more expensive than fully comp in Kent...

think i need to move unis

Yep its the "put in a claim for whiplash too mate" attitude that has them running at a loss currently AFAIK.

tell em the truth or you might as well just make it as cheap as you can (ie. tpft) and insure it in kent.

they will very easily find out you are at uni and hence car was being kept at different address should you need to claim

just out of random interest... did u know that there is no actual medical condition for whiplash and in eastern europe there is not even a word for whiplash... and since law cases for motoring accidents began offering compensation for 'whiplash' claims for whiplash have gone up 900%...

as a physio its actually part of the job to subtly try and find out if someone is seeking compensation during treatment... but you can easily tell someone who has whiplash to someone who has a stiff neck cos theyve been rear ended...

i dont agree with the get as much as you can out of it attitude...

random info for you there...

and im gonna insure it in birmingham i think, thanks for all your advice

Even if motor claims fall this year, the insurance companies are feeling the pinch. They are still dealing with the big bills for the American hurricanes, the Asian tsunami and the earthquake in Pakistan - it's a global market and they cover all sorts of different risks.
