Default Wireless broadband....HOW?

Is there any device that simply plugs into my phone socket and will connect to my pc/modem wireless. Just for a single desktop PC.

Thanks, Paul.

I am the wrong person to answer BUT no, I think you have to have a wireless router connected through your PC. Thats how my wireless connection works anyway. I'm laying in bed right now

Porkie, Your right your not the right person to answer this

You have a netgear wireless route which connects direct to your phone line and allows multiple connection on wireless and 4 port 100mbs FD to a NIC card

Do a search on Wireless routers, that should put you off the idea

Paul J,

The router goes into the modem socket and does the "dialing" as it were, this will keep your connection live for you pritty much all the time, you computer connectes to the router via the Ethernet cable, if you computer doesn't have an ethernet card then you will also need to get one, The Router has an in-built firewall which is pritty decent to be honest, won't protect your from popup crap but will stop all those kiddies who love to scan your computer.....

Dead and gone, yes i have an ethernet card but i dont want any computer hard wired to the router. Try to explain better, i have 1 desktop PC completely the other side of house to the phone socket and dont want to have to run and hide a cable.

you need exactly what dead and gone has suggested but the router needs wireless capabilities. Then you need a wireless card for your pc (an external usb one or a PCI card with an aerial rather than a socket for a network cable). If you are running XP it is a piece of piss to set-up. I have two PCs and a laptop all running wirelessly and they are all networked together for file sharing and printing. Have a look at www.draytek.com for an idea of how this works in practice.

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=45023

Is this the same or does this need to be hard wired to another PC before it will allow remote use of asdl?

Sorry for the Delay Paul,

Dead and Gone has just about summed it up

The reason I say put you off is Price.. A lot of people don't really want to pay Ł100+ for a wireless route then Ł25 for a PCMCIA card etc etc.

Porkie and me have the Netgear router with the Firewall and WEP stuff mainly for what your looking at which is the cosmetic side "no wires" Sean at Zoo has the Links one which is cheaper. The cheap way to protect yourself is to use a none routable IP Address something like 192.168.0.xxx but I don't want to go into that too much.

If you looking for a top setup then get the complete Wireless route this way the Telephone socket has the filter on which splits

1: Phone 2: ADSL.

2: goes into the Router which has the inbuilt modem, this means your User ID and Password is stored in this.

This then connects your line onto your ISP which gives you an IP Address; your router will then share this address however it will give your Workstations a different range something like I mentioned above 192.168.0.xxx Between these two ranges will be the inbuilt firewall protection which you can customise or leave alone.

Wireless settings, I would advise you setup WEP 128 "yes I know" it’s a start in the security but can be breached; I prefer MAC address lockdown as this is a better way combined with the WEP to secure wireless workstations.

You can buy Wireless cards for PCI slots in PC’s this will be ether 11mbs 54mbs or if you have the $$$ 108mbs bear in mind you ISP connection speed most are 512kbs

Apogees if I gone off a bit
