Default Engine Advantages ECU password?

odd question, but ive got an omex ecu mapped by EA and Paul password protected it; and I don't know what it is!

Has anyone else had one protected and might know if he uses a common password for all his customers?
Have tried ringing but no answer!

cheers

How do you put a password on them? I must put one of my ECU to stop APT fucking with my mapping. Thinking they know best

id ask him, but could it not be to do with the fact he doesnt want his worked being pinched or edited? i mean if it you could edit it and you did by accident then the engine goes pop you could try and sue em or something cause it broke cause of the ecu?? just a thought

Tony, its under "ECU - Set Password"
Gareth - have; no answer! Needed it for tomorrow really!
Zetec - Would sort of make sense but then it's a one-off map anyway so nobody could pinch it tbh. Plus, everything is locked so I can't even data log and that's definately within my rights

Its not unusual for Mappers to lock ECU's. They don't want their Maps shared. I think thats a fair point. I really don't think they will give you the Password.

Christian,

Was hoping a tuner would reply

See what you're saying, but as its a custom live map does it matter? Also what about all the other features I can't use because its protected?

Data logging for example, and adding features to it such as WI etc?

Just because it went there once doesn't mean I have to take it there everytime I want a feature adding?

This is wronge, as you pay their rates to map your car,
And as it mapped to that car, it can only be used as a base map on another set up.

But best is ring Paul, and ask him, i dont he wont give you it.

Japenese Tunin are known for this, but will not give the password out, which did kick up a big out cry. Like their done something wrong on the map.

Not really, if the car is more of less identical the map can be put on the other car and tweeked, rather than starting from scratch.

now asmuch as agree with christian IF it affects the functions you payed for with the ECU then thats bollocks

but speak to paul, im sure he will look after his customers

ALSO what happens if paul hills goes skint, does that mean you are left with a ECU thats junk

If I remember there was a big discussion a while ago about a certain mapper locking his ecu's.

I really can see where he is coming from as they don't want there hard work stolen but for it to block all the other features then that's not right.

yeah - unfortunatly there is only one form of password, and thats on the entire ECU....ie. you cant just PW protect the map.

hmmm okay cheers Martin, might be true then.

someones locked it though lol, and its never gone anywhere other than EA for ecu work so it seems strange

he did say he's heard of that before or something, and laptop spec can sometimes make it ask for a password when there isn't one - can't believe it but will try another computer!!

There must be a computer genius somewhere that could get past a simple password

Start with "Boobies"

Twitchyrear - EA have said to Ballin that they don't lock the ecu's and everything I've read about them - and having been to a RR day there last year and been impressed - has been good!

However, their rollers are WAY out cos I only made about 160bhp and with a dump valve it should have been making 300+

Skybus is fine, just STUPIDLY thirsty and I really hate stopping at petrol stations... it does less than 140 miles between refills!

Sierra is coming along nicely

Does the software download the map first then check the password and deny access?

Crazy question I know...

Trouble is, ask someone like Karl (nothing personal in the example used), who has very unique idea's and you will probably find that most of the stuff he does, he wouldn't want people to access, purely because, even though the entire Map may not be useful, certain area's of info may give his secrets away. I think that's a fair point, no?

I'm not saying that its right or wrong, but it's always going to be a grey area. The ECU belongs to the customer, but the knowledge that has been imparted into the Map belongs to the Tuner.

We all know that there are alot of 'Wannabe' mappers out there and also alot of people keen to pick holes in other peoples work.

Its a little bit like asking an Electrician to not only do the work for you, but show you exactly how he did it. FFS, thats what he spent years at college for!!

Having said all this, you should be entitled to be able to access all the auxillary features.

What Omex ECU is it 500, 600 or 700 as some versions of firmware on the 700 ECU atleast have problems which mean everytime you plug in the ECU it asks for the password, at this stage switch off the ECU and power it backup and most of the time it goes past this stage. Another bug in some versions of firmware also mean some laptops do not work very well and I had to use 3 different until I got mine talking correctly. If the tuner stats that he did not set a password then talk to Omex and get there advice as it may be your laptop etc.

sparkplug cheers mate, seems to make sense. its a 600 series ecu.

will try turning off then back on etc. see if i cant get it to play ball!

omex have said there was a bug with one version, and that if i sent it back they'd upgrade it to xxx but when the laptop tries to connect its already updated apparantly!

Actually it's nothing like that in this case.

If you want to try and make an accurate analogy, it's like an electrician building a complicated fuse box in your house, putting a big padlock on it and not letting you have the key when you need to change a fuse.

If someone was intent on copying a map or whatever and making use of it, I'm sure the Ł350 + VAT that Ballin mentioned would be only a tiny hurdle to them.

Nothing stopping a mapper from copyrighting his material..

By today's standards, most of the password systems on car ECUs are relatively easy to break.
