Default Porsche 924

anyone got any real experience with these?

do you reckon something like this would make a decent trackday weapon as a starting point?

924 has a VW van engine in it. It was originally a design VW were going to use as a car but Porsche swiped it and used it instead.

Get a Pug 205 GTi awesome track day car

944 Turbos do look pretty smart and are around 250brake I do believe, but that comes at a price as most examples i've seen are pretty well looked after

here's a non-turbo 944. Does look smart and like a bit of a project in the making

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...5221%26fvi%3D1

kinda gone off the ideas of 2.0 Zetec's XR2's and Mi16's 205's now as they are great pocket rockets, but been done to death now, fancied something a little different

just something I could strip, stick decent brakes, suspension etc on, leave the engine pretty much as is and just go straight in from there. Doesn't have to be anything blisteringly quick to start with, just a decent turn of pace

924s are slow and look gay, but neither is a problem as a track car, they cheap, RWD, and built well.

there is a 924 championchip around, proper low budget thing, so got potential to make a good lil track car.

wont ever be the quickest round the track, but it aint a race, its about having a laff, and a RWD car has got more potential for fun than a front driver

So what if the engine was used in a van? pintos were used in transits etc too.
the engine is just a 2litre 4cyl single overhead cam engine thats pretty strong and pushes out pretty ordinary power for the engine type and size.
Nothing bad, nothing amazing.

So an Elise isnt a nippy lil track weapon then Mike as its got a boring K-series in it?

What about countless crossflow/pinto/zetec caterham/westfield type thingies?

Talking plop-plops methinks

Better off with a Porsche GT1 LeMans car too, but the whole point of even thinking of a 928 to fuck around with on the track is you can pick them up for well under 500quid...

You're missing the point completely!

When the Porsche 924 was released, it was meant to be a sports car and its a Porsche, not some modern day Lotus, which incidently, Colin Chapman prefered light, excellent handling cars whereby lots of power wasnt always necessary, and as the K series engine, faults asside, isnt a bad engine, your point isnt valid.

Re the westfields etc all, pretty much any engine can make them quick, and again they arent some grandiose(sp) sports car, unlike a Porsche.

EDIT

Plus the 928 is a better car, but we're talking about the 924

Maybe you missed the episode of Top Gear where they bought cheap Porsche's.

That you tell you everything you need to know. The only (older) Porsche worth buying is a 911.

i'd rather the E30 - for £500 there are better cars suited to the track, and imo, a 924 isnt one of them. I would want something that had some performance on a track day!

theres plenty of E30 320's, a few 325's and even an E34 535i Auto Sport for £349!!

Automatic, 140,000 miles, Brilliant Red. Full M-Tec Body Kit, Alloys, Recaros, Electric Sunroof, Traction Control, M-Tec Steering Wheel, AC Schnicher Exhaust, Etc. Trade Sale No Tax Or MOT, Body Work Very Clean, Can Be Heard Running, Drives. Faulty Idle Speed Control Valve. No Dreamers Or Offers. £349.

Bargain!

I was thinking along the same lines as itsmeagain, simply because 924's are small change cars

If I were to hold fire until the spring and spend a few more pennies, i'd be on the hunt for a cheap Jap mobile with forced induction, such as EVO (I, II or III), Early WRX, Pulsar GTiR, Older shape GT4, maybe even an R31 and do the same sort of thing there

think that's better VFM than, say a 944 Turbo for that sort of thing

But the 924 s had the 2.5 engine and weighed less than the 944 and was quicker in standard form, however the 924 can accept the 944 drivetrain easily so very upgradeable. the 944 engine was 1/2 a 928 engine so theat wipes the better engine theory, 944's are pretty expensive to repair as clutch changes take over 12 hours. The weight distribution sets them up better for auto-x than track cars. The 924 was designed as a safty car and the first rung on the Porsche ladder, the 928 was actually designed to take over and replace the 911 and so had a compleatly different idea behind it, the 924 was the fiesta popular plus, but the 928 was the RS cosworth to the Capri. The engine was also used in a LT van however you could say the cossie engine was used in the 2.0 gls, both being pinto's but nothing alike. All that said the 924 is a fun car, not a track car and certainly not worth persuing for great power gains. The only good thing about the car is that ford rims fit. The 944 is expensive to get anywhere near that 260 bhp and is a heavy beast. At this level your paying 400 for the badge and 200 for the car. If your really want to see what a miserable bunch of c*nts own these cars go to rennlist.com. That alone would make me walk away from owning any kind of Porsche, thats why I own 2, both with V8's in them, and no, there not 928's.
