Default Ignition Module

is there anyway off testing the ignition module that sits on top of the dizzy on the CVH carb engine's since i think mines at fault, car doesn't spark i've tried the coil of my mothers 740 volvo (which also has breakerless ignition) and still doesn't work so i put it down to the module or it could be the magnetic disk/sensor in the dizzy i suppose, any ideas guys. Cheers baz

iirc. it should have 2 12volt lives an earth and switching signal coming form it which goes to the coil.
I would check this then remove the module and there are 2 wire plug in the bottom of it connect a volt meter set to AC volts across these two terminals on the dissy side, and you should get 0.5 volts rising. this tells you the dissy is alright and the module is junk.
Hope this helps

Um yeah i'll check that, the module has 3 wires that goto it, it has one 12v live that comes from igition and then from the battery only live when ignition is on, one in the middle which is earth i think, and a green wire that goes from the module to the coil, (havn't checked the voltage on these yet since fathers gone of with his meter.

The live is working fine since it puts out voltage when the igition is switched on, i havn't check the earth yet, or the Green wire that goes from the module to the coil, but i would have fought they would be ok,

Does the module put 12v down the green wire to calaspe the coil or does it earth the green wire,

um so i just remove the module and put a meter across the connertors and it should give 0.5v rising, i don't have to turn the engine or dizzy do i.

Cheers for the reply dean and more info would be apricheated

You need to connect your meter across the two connectors and make sure you set it to AC volts. You should be getting 0.5 AC volts rising with the engine turning over. This tells you the dissy is working.

Easiest way to check for switching at the coil is with a test light.
Cant remember if it is switched live or earth so just check for both.
Connect a test light one side to earth and probe the wires @ the coil one at a time, one will be live, then Turn the engine over and the other should flash (do the same thing with the test light connected to the positive incase it is switched earth)
If it flashes then your coil is fooked. If it doesn't flash and the dissy checks are ok then you will need a new ignition module.

Im sure you know but make sure you have a strong battery while doing these tests or you will get wrong results

ps: what was the problem in the first place did you brakedown or been modding somthing eles?

Keep us updated on how you get on. Good luck.

pps: would of saved you alot of time if you was in the AA.
I carry these modules and would prob of had you back on the road within no time

Ok just tested the car, wiring seems ok, dizzy connectors sit at 0.48v and rise to about 1v to 1.4v when turning the engine over, so that seems fine, tested the coil, and seem to be have normal resistance's, so im now just putting it down to the module gonna try and get hold of one from a scrappy tommorrow u guys have any ideas on how much they cost new. Cheers baz

You can get brand new dizzys on ebay with module for Ł38.

I wouldn't bother with a second hand one as these are very prone to breaking due to over heating. you wont get the heat sink gell with a second hand one either.
New one from your local part shop will be about Ł40. cheap as chips imo.

Well its only a mk3 fezza, i'll try one from the scrappy theirs a local one near to me and they take back stuff it it goes dead within a few weeks, for a fiver i would rather take the risk, i should be able to find some computer heat sink compound anyway, but i'll keep it in mind about getting a new one if the one from the scrappy goes dead, cheers for your help guys i'll let u know weather it fixes it or not later today.
