Engine mapping - On the road or on the rollers?
Just been having an chat about mapping of engines (in the car)
I reckon of all the forums I use PassionFord would have the most users who have benefited from having their cars remapped. So which is better a live map on the road, or on a rolling road
I'm told the only reason tuners live map on the road is because they cannot afford a proper rolling road which seems daft...

No rolling road accurately simulates the road.
So it you want it mapped to use on the road, thats where it needs to be mapped (well brunters to do it legally!)
If you want to make maximum power at a rolling road shootout though, a road cant accurately simulate a set of rollers, so it needs mapping on the rollers.
So it depends on where you want your car to make the power?!

Thats what I was thinking
This all came about after watching that Lotus blow up the first time round on 5th Gear.
They spend 2 days on the rolling road and still it ran lean. I was thinking that might not have happened if it had been tuned live on one of those runs.
Appreciate the info lads

Testing the future
the rolling road that they used, like most others, did not have proper road speed airflow. if you don't have that, and not many in the world do have full frontal air flow at high speed (we have up to 70mph), then it becomes very unrealistic, particularly for forced induction cars with air to air heat exchangers.

No
In the case of a properly fitted wet kit giving only a 25% increase in power on a turbocharged car with poor intercooling.

i like to do all my mapping on the road, because i havent got a rolling road
if i had the choose i would do most of my mapping on the rolling road, then take it outside and check/adjust my work

Dyno if you can afford it (to get the absolute best out of your engine in a proper controlled safe environment), followed by a rolling road with good cooling followed by a proper balls out session in proper live conditions (to adjust the map to REAL time in-car conditions).

I like to use an Ordnance Survey map for my mapping.
A good favourite of mine is the landranger 152, which covers Northampton and Milton Keynes.
This also shows railways, electricity Pilons and animal sanctuaries.......

MSD set my Cossie Westfield up on the road in the pissing rain and it runs so much better now it's like a new car...They found things I didn't even know were wrong, made changes, told me what they were doing all the time. Went out several times and got piss wet as Westfields leak a little!! Top blokes... Would have been better and easier for us all in the dry but then they are based in Blackpool....
Don't forget some peoples rollers lie....or so I'm told.
Ta very much

i cant really see the advantages to setting up on a rolling road tbh, other than the weather. all i see are disadvantages. i prefer to have my car set up in as close to the conditions its going to run in as i can.
p.s see you in grizedale kenny , dont forget the laptop pal

All of the above have there own benafits, Yes you can map on the Engine dyno and the rolling road, But before the car is realised to the owner IT HAS TO BE LIFE MAPPED on the road or Brunters no ifs or buts,
as you cant simulate cylinder temps on any of these like you can get on the road which is where its home is,
If the engine is a dyno queen and never used on the road then that is the best place to map it,
I use all of the above
