Default s2 problem , can anyone plz advise

hi. i need to check to see if my fuel guage works , can i unplug the wires from the sender under the back seat, and loop the connections of the wires that go to the dash ,and check if my guage works ,is this the correct way to see, the car has stood for 10 months with half a TANK OF FUEL, i then put 4 jerry cans. (total of 23 litres) extra in the other day. took the car out for the first time today and the guage didnt move, or could the sender of got stuck at half a tank.. the sender and tank were new 3 years ago or 12 k miles old..

is there a chance a bit of driving may free the sender up. how would you check first

thank you ,dave

bigup ALAN S1 ,who drove 200 miles ,with his missus today,to say hello, and visit the westsussex rsoc meet, hope you got back dude, realy nice to meet you and julie

The guage probably works on an earth system mate...

Though I couldnt tell you how to supply a feed to the actual guage to check it.

BUT..... Exactly the same happened to an RST I had, was sat around for a while, as yours with half a tank...

no matter how much fuel put in, gauge didnt move.......

SO, dropped the tank down, unscrewed the sender, lifted it out and it had corroded quite badly, seized in fact, the inside of the tank had rusted up like a goodun too, it was obviously the condensation

picked up a S/Hand tank, and gauge fitted and all worked fine..... If you do a search, I posted up a little while back a step by step guide to removiong and refitting tank.

The only confusing bit is the fact you mention a new tank a short while ago, but other than that I cant help any more mate sorry

thanks mate, i will earth the sender wires then tomorrow, i actualy fitted the new tank and sender when i got the car, thats not a problem, i just needed to know if i could earth the wire , before the tank is looked at, it might be a problem with the wires that run along the sills, i would have desturbed them when i did my car, i will give it a go in the morning anyway, now damo,

cheers

Under the rear seat yeah.

I fyou un tape the wiring behind the carpet, (prob be easier to take seat out), you will find a thick black and red wire, this is feul pump supply, a thick brown wire, this is the earth fo pump and screws to self tapper, right near where seat bracket is, there is at least one other I think it is brown with a red trace, very thin, that will be the gauge feed mate, as I say cut the tape off quite a way back, as the looom around the plug for the fuel computer under the seat is wrapped up weird and may confuse the issue

Personally Im sure it will be the tank / sender
