Default RS2000 4x4, good cars?

i've always been a Ford boy at heart, i got rid of my 32k mint Mk5 XR3i 130ps Cabriolet because i realised that for the same insurance price i could have my 200SX. at the time, i wanted an S1 RST or a 4x4 RS2000 but i couldn't get insured. i really regret selling it now.

now i've just turned 20 my insurance company will quote me on both an S1 and RS2k for the same price as i pay for the SX.

my old man has a Mk3 Escort cab and its nothing but trouble so i'll leave the S1 out of it i think.

i basically want a nice RS, i'm not bothered about the performance aspects as i know its not going to live up to my S13 (which is about 300bhp). i fancy a car thats going to be left standard barring maybe a set of wheels. i also want something thats going to be nice and reliable, comes with a decent spec, a little performance, returns good MPG (my S13 can drop as low as 13-15mpg if i welly it and the best i've had is 24.7mpg) and most of all, can be left in shitty areas without drawing too much attention to itself.

other cars i've thought about are Mk3 VR6 or a Mk3 GTI 16v (only £30 difference on insurance). how would a 4by RS2k compare as a day to day car?

also, i'm ignoring the FWD RS2000 for the 4x4 becasue the 4x4 is rarer and a bit more special and FWD is a bit ghey. what the difference in MPG between the 2? maybe i should consider a FWD one too?

anyone fancy a swap?!

I've had 2 2wd's and thought about getting a 4x4 but was put off by reading that some suffered with transfer box problems & parts for it were unavailable from ford, don't know if it's 100% true but it was enough to put me off, my 2wd's were great though, very reliable & fairly cheap to run.

yeah i was. pissed them all off by saying that the performance on VR6's was crap but i was interested in one anyway. seems like the truth hurts.

i'd say a RS2000 4x4 performance is crap too, but like with the VW's, i don't want it for performance. think i'd prefer a Escort to a Golf

your right the mk3 vr is too frumpy. have a look on ebay at the mk2 golf with a vr... not that im biased but you can get over 34mpg on the motorway (i average about 24 day to day) and the performance is great! none of the unnessesary weight of the mk3. vr engines have been known to go for over 200'000miles too.
worth considering when you can blow m3's away with a stock lump...

yeah 4x4 alot slower and transfer box probs crop up and NO NEW PARTS are available because they are rare and ford don't see the point of stocking them.

Aside from that i've had loads of rst's and now i have a RS2000, not as fast maybe but far nicer to drive, reliable, strong as an ox and handle much better, i am very pleased with mine and would advise any one to go for it

also speak to us lads at www.rs2000-16v.com will give you all the adviceyou need, we'll be at fordfair if you wanna come for a chat

Bollox... I had a 4x4 and it was as good if not better than any FWD I went up against, on a twisty road it was far far superior...

I took it on track last year at fordfair and embarased(sp) plenty of suposed 'more powerful' cars...

Absolutly fantastic car... One of my biggest regrets was selling it, even tried to buy it back

cool did you ever compare yours do a 2wd one? what MPG did it return?

as for an S1, i love them but won't get a good one for my money and i don't want to leave one in shit areas as it'd get nicked, also i'd ruin one as a daily driver

I think we worked out it was averaging sommat like just over 30mpg...

To be fair it was better on a long run, but it's not much worse than the 1.8 Mundayo we have now!!

I know because I bought it off you

All joking aside the RS2000 4x4 is a cracking car that drives superbly.
I would not swap one RS2000 4x4 for 10 rusting bean tin S1's, they drive sooo much better.

Mine/Pauls old one after a few tweeks blowing off a Nissan thingy at the Pod.

RS2000 are very underrated and capable cars. You will pay a good premium for 4x4 because there are so few about, and as said the transfer box is something to consider as they are not available, although i wonder how serious the problem is if they get looked after properly..?
2wd are virtually bulletproof, even after a good mileage, and drive way better than an S1 will as an everyday car, and be way more reliable.
Biggest problem you will find with any of them is getting a rot-free one Mk5 ones WILL have the fuel cap hanging out (or been repaired, with varying degrees of success) and finding a Mk5/6 Escort of any sort with back arches that are anywhere near perfect is a serious mission... I looked at at least a dozen 2000's even up to very late "P"'s and failed to find one I was happy with in that respect without paying serious money..
Good luck though, if you can find a nice one they are a rewarding car - not the fastest thing on the road, but nice package.

i remember ages ago when you had it and remember it was a good spec.

i know i want something cheaper to run, easier to live with, etc but a standard one must be well slow if thats what yours did.

to put it into prespective, a stage 3 S13 like mine does low 13's. i think i'm going to regret getting rid of it.

i want an RS though.

If you want sx performance get a Cossie. Just be aware that they can be unreliable/rusty if you get the wrong one

can't afford a cossie, or insurance, plus i can't leave one anywhere, plus 2wd saph's seem to have a piss poor rear axle setup and weak diff/halfshafts compared to SX's.

RS2k or RST are my options. i don't really want an RST so that leaves me with the RS2k.

i'm not sure if they are better car's than a 16v Mk3 Golf GTI/VR6 or dare i say it, a Mk3 Astra GSI? i like Fords though

If you want performance and an RS you've got to go turbocharged. RST or nowt basically. VR6 is the better all round choice, but it ain't an RS

crap you can't drive a turbo in the wet and they're far more prone to failure, yes yes well looked after they can be fine but there is always that risk and when needed for everyday use last thing you want is it sat on the drive in bits gettin the bus to work

i don't want performance, although i think i might quickly miss the performance i have and then regret selling for an RS2k or VR6.

i think i'll come along to Ford Fair and have a good look around a 4x4 RS2000 and talk to some owners.

turbo will give you more straight line performance, but if you want something for everyday reliable motoring without all the torquesteer and wheelspinning antics and rough ride, then the 2000 will be a whole lot more pleasant to live with, either 2wd or 4x4

i'm going to drive it around like a girl anyway. they'll be no point in ever booting it as i'll only end up crying when it doesn't come on boost, push me back in my seat and make my pants brown.

what makes me laugh is that some on here think that you have to have a turbo to go fast, yes if you want straight line speed on a nice straight road go for a rst but the rs2k will kill it round the twisty rds and in the wet and if the rst is standard the rs2k will beat it in a straight line, most rs2k will be chipped have K&N ETC ETC and run 170bhp
GO FOR IT
rs cars were out before they were turbo'd
