M3 might not be a rocket ship but its not slow, e36 evo is about 12.2 0-100, e46's are a bit quicker.
Not bad 'out of the box' and some (e36's) are still around backed up by the BMW warranty (like mine)

Own both a modded 3dr and am m3 evo,m3 is a better car if we take off out blinkers, have done loads of jap stuff in my m3,subaru imports, and new wrx,evo 6 ,had a guy on motorway comming back from scottish rsoc day,in saff who bottled it,most ppl who drive m3,s are not petrol heads like us and wount push them as hard as us,at the end of the day the m3 will cruise well in to treble figures on motorway, and get where i am going, where will cossie be,on hard shoulder broken down

I would quite happily put my e36 M3 up against 20 psi and a t34
I had a tear up with a modded wrx and i was on his boot all the way past 130+

Ah, agree with you there on those points but still disagree that you get more for your money!
3dr's are not far off 10k prices at the mo, whcih funnilly enough is what M3 Evo's are at the mo, bet you get a nicer, more refined ride with more gadgets etc for the same money!

i agree with that but if you take Ł10.000 and i take the same you buy an m3 and i buy a saf cos for around half that then we decide we are bored with the power you have no money left i have Ł5.000 to spend and once this is done i then have a car capable of beeting a super car . this is what i ment by more for your money

Fair enough but would you really consider an M3 Evo to be a super car? I know there bloody good cars but not in that sort of range?
What the top speed on these, unrestricted they stomp on to about 180mph don't they?

Dont think Performance Ford would do it. Or if they did, they would edit it.
Something like Redline "may" be interested. Stage 3 with KNOWN mods vs E36. Drag and Circuit and Braking tests.
Could be an eye opener. Does anybody remember Revs about 5 years+ ago. Did a Standard Saff vs E30 M3 and they rated the M3 better
Oh and bias aside, anyone who thinks that ANY turbo car gives a better drive than a powerful NA needs to understand that nothing-nothing-nothing-everything isnt the easiest way to make progress

Ahh, but who needs to be scientific... a number of people on here have said their M3 (or whatever other car) would woop a cossie...
Time to put money where mouths are methinks.

What's the point in putting a modded car against a standard one? Stick a stage 3 M3 against a stage 3 Cossie They are two completely different cars. The M3 isn't a boy racer car that you chuck bits onto to make it faster, it's about a complete package that doesn't break down, refined, handles, quiet, but makes a lovely howl when you open it up and is a joy to live with as apposed to wondering what that rattle is and how much it's gonna cost

EIL132, not relevant if only to squash all this pub talk. I was only saying that those that claim their M3 (whatever stage) is faster than a cossie (stage 1, stage 3, etc...) should put their money where their mouth is and stop using magazine figures, my mate's stories, etc...
Pitch up and prove it
PS: Same applies to cossie owners
BTW, I took my car (stg 1 4x4 sapph) up the pod and ran a time which I now use to compare against other cars to get an idea of how quick mine is. I however take magazine figures with a hefty pinch of salt on the basis that the journo that ran it probably didn't give two hoots about the car, same for manufacturers who will run with minimal fuel and trim.
I ran mine up with all seats, ice, whatever fuel was in there, etc...
As an example, I read a feature in some magazine that had the std porche boxter, nissan 350Z and BMW Z4 3L slower than mine on 1/4 mile by up to a second. I would assume that any owner of such cars would not get near these times unless he has no mechanical sympathy for the car (I do and took it fairly gingerly ).
I am sure you know that the difference between an owner's time on strip/track and a journo or manufacturer can be huge, hence the suggestion for a one to one battle
Phew

Right 10k for an evo, give me 7k and you can take mine, eili, correct why put a standard car against a modded one,as for tuning potental there are loads for m3's.quite a few 500 bhp ones about, maybe subaru drivers are right, cossie drivers think they are unbeatable, what about the fact that some ppl just cant drive,so ogf course you will hose them,im up for a grudge mate, would be good i performance ford, better still it could be between my 3dr and my m3,oh sorry not fair as 3dr is modded, and why should it be at brunters cant you shandy drinkers come north of the boarder

I was having a "play" with an evo6 extreme (the white things with the orange bits on) last weekend... we both came hacking down the A38 and nearly blew a new shape M3 into the hedge... anyways, he decided he wanted some so he chased us, and caught up when we were sitting at a set of lights which were 4 lanes wide... Me and Mr Evo were exchanging words when this M3 pulled up and started revving the nuts off it.. We both laughed and when the lights changed i got killed by the evo from a pull off but poor mr M3 may as well have had the handbrake on!! How i laughed...

i can understand when you say about the cossie is modded, but a standard cossie is only like 200 brake,so a modded one will be more like for like
even when mine was a old type stage1 i never came across an m3 that i didnt whoop.
yeah id put my stage2 against any m3, bring it on

can i be honest if you spent the sort of money that i spent on my old series 2 or what most ( not all) have spent on their cossies, and spent it on a 3 litre M3 you are talking about a 600bhp m3 as the turbo conversion is about 6 to 7k and is a guarenteed minimum of 550bhp so that would be a match up and to put the record straight abit i bought my M3 from a guy with a stage 3 3 door but he had to sell the M3 to pay for the engine rebuild on the cossie and he still states that he misses the beemer and round the twisties the M3 is all over a cossie

I'd also expect an evo and scooby to out-handle a cossie (unless very well sorted again).
I'm not that blinkered (probably less than most tbh).

Thats my old M3 above
Top car that was 100% reliable for the 25000 miles i did in it
Yes my stage 3 3dr cos was faster in acceleration but point to point the M3 was superior. I will probably get another M3 at some point but can't see myself parting with the 3dr either.
To put the record straight Dan i didn't sell my M3 to pay for the engine rebuild on the cos, it was because we had another baby & the M3 was too small & i had bought a Volvo 850R, 3 cars were too much !
Hope she's still going well Dan.
