does anyone know about audis?
a friend of mine is looking for anew car as he has just has twins and needs something with a new boot.
his got about 10k to spend.
he was looking at something like a C5 estate, but just found out that he could pick up a high milage audi A6 avant for that money.
only problem being is that they have racked up about 90,000 miles.
is this a lot for an audi diesel, and will he start getting problems with it soon?
the chances are that most of the 90,000 are motorways miles.
they are in good condition and a nice car (better than the C5). but he dosent know if he should take the risk of buying a 90,000 mile car rather than one with only 30,000 on it.

All Audi diesels are capable of 200k+ miles so don't even give it a second thought. Provided they are maintained properly ie: regular oil changes, you won't have any trouble. They come in two formats, the 1.9 or the 2.5 - depends on what sort of driving you do but the 1.9 is more than capable even in a big car.
IMO there is NO risk.
The Audi will hold a stronger residual value as well. The C5 will depreciate faster than Prescot's fuel budget
We have the A4 and it's excellent

If the a6 is the 2.5tdi quattro then at about 200,000 miles the centre diff bearing might start to make a noise, but thats likely to be the first fault you see
The 2wd ones dont suffer from this low milage (for an audi) glitch though, and will generally go on far longer before anything needs doing.
If he buys one with 90,000 miles on it then tell him to keep the revs down until he reaches 100,000 rpm as thats the running in period for an audi diesel engine
Seriously though, i wouldnt be put off at 90K providing it has full audi history.

cheers for the advice. i tought the audi was the better choice aswell.
do they not suffer from problems like suspension and steering troubles or anything with this sort of milage?

I have a audi as a daily driver, A4 1.8 special edition 1999.
Air con, full electrics etc all the nice luxuries, its done 48,000 miles , with not one problem. Only parts ive replaced are wear and tear parts.
Great cars

even my petrol audi was still mehcanically problem free when i sold it on 220K miles.
the 5 cylinder engines are the pick of the bunch IMHO, both petrol and diesel
