i've paid folk overseas for stuff on ebay and they just need your swift code as you say. i calle dmy branch to ask, and they said that they could not give me it (actually, it wasn't my branch, it was a fucking call centre in india 
). they did tell me that it was on my statement though. i looked at it had been on there for months, but i'd never noticed. it's just a combination of the account number and sort code anyway. and it's perfectly safe to give it out.

As I do a lot of transfers to UK ( 
) I am kind of expert on the matter.
Transfer by means of eurotransfer system needs:
IBAN (international banking account number)
SWIFT
Name of the person recieving
It can be helpfull to have bank details and adress. All of this they schould give to you when you ask them with no problems, although some banks make problems, I know Brom had some.
