Default M25 Speed Cameras

I'd always thought that these were only live when there is a variable speed
limit is enforced, but I seemd to have got flashed doing about 80mph after passing one of them. Throughout the stretch prior to this, there was no flashes from the other cameras?

Can anyone shed any light on this?

I've seen these cameras, and they go off all the time! I've sat in traffic over that way before just before one of those cameras and it was literally going off at cars comming the other way every 2 - 3 cars. They are on most of the overhead bridges around the variable speed limit zones in the directions heading towards heathrow from either side. Whether ppl are getting tickets from them I dont know!
