Default Sub Boxes..

Any tips?

Popped into Halfrauds today just to browse the selection and the fella started going on about different sizes (as in cubic feet) for different subs??

Any advice? I'm after a twin 12" holed box, now should it be ported or not? What size should it be??

Oh and wheres a good on-line place to buy this kinda stuff?

depends what kinda bass you want whether it should be ported or not and the manufacturuer of the sub will recommend a cu/ft for the optimum sound.

altho with 2 x 12 inch subs, you should DEFINITELY get a ported box and probably some neons and some friends that hang outside mcdonalds a lot

I find my 10 incher performs perfectly in a sealed box.

Never had any complaints.

A ported box gives you a lower bass frequency, eg for music like snoop/dre, not so good for dancy tunes.

A sealed box would be better for dancy punchy bass.

Yes, ever make of speaker needs different sized boxes.

Also bear in mind, a ported box needs to be roughly half the size again of that of a sealed box. The port itself, in the length it goes into box and the hole size is very important, it can drastically change the way the bass sounds.

A good recommendation for a bass sub/amp combo is the JL Audio 1000/1 monoblock amp and a 15w3 (or 15w7 cant remem) sub, again by JL audio.

just get some reinforcements for the windows and a split charge battery system

I am under the impression that a ported box will sound louder at a given frequency (tuned by the port's size, shape and length), tailing off either side, whereas a sealed box will have a more consistent level across the frequency range. I am delusional ?

You might be better off (sound wise, not necessarily financially) buying a box with subs that have been designed to work as a pair and flogging your two subs.

You could also ask on the following boards:
http://www.caraudioforum.com/vbb3/index.php
http://www.talkaudio.co.uk/
http://www.carstereo.com/forum/index.cfm

I don't go on any of them, just found them in google so can't comment on how good/bad they are.

Godd luck.

That depends on what sort of dance music is it!
I listen to hardcore/oldskool and dnb, which is mainly all about the bass and has loads of low frequencies.
Ive got a 10" ported Vibe box which does the job perfectly

Hi Billy, if u want a custom box made i can make you one no problems...

about the size of the box...about 1.25cuft per sub sealed would be perfect for the subs..

depending on how you like your music and what music you listen to, will determine what sort of box you should go for...

i myself have a pair of Pioneer 12's in one of my own boxes which is about 5.65cuft after port displacement and speaker displacement etc etc and FOOK me does it drop! the box is HUGE simply becuase i like the LOW frequencies...certainly has made a number of ladies smile LOL

if you listen to fast bass, like dance etc, then stick with sealed, if you like rap, hip hop etc then ported...

you might even find 1 12 in a ported box is more than loud enough for your needs if you wanna chat in more detail, add me on messenger on bassboy_loud@hotmail.com

I much prefer sealed boxes.
My old 12s used to drop no problem - loud as fook too, when bridged across the old Genesis Monoblock

its always better to diy than buy a ready built one ..
i got a cheapy pair of 12's but built the box according to the theile characteristics and bloody eck did they drop well .. even put my mates very expensive ones to shame..
BUT the box was huge only just fitted in the back of the erst about 2 inches below the parcel shelf and 3 inches either side ..
plastic drain pipe makes a good porting material but dont forget to make the box nice and solid with supports for the port .. the ends can be melted into a curved shape this allows a better sound cuts need to be smooth, if just left cut it can sound a bit raspy .
if you want some serious bass then start looking at a folded port design, built some large cabinets for my old mobile nightclub set up a few years ago .. longthrow deep bass.. but size matters 2 x 12 in each box

As per my email

spec: 500w Max, 160w Nom, 4 ohm, Model TS-W303C
-----
Diamondplate Foamed IMPP (Injection Molded Polypropylene) Rigilite™ Composite Cone Woofer (Titanium Grey)
One-Piece Cone Construction for Reduced Distortion
Dual-Layer Urethane Surround
Direct-to-Cone Voice Coil Mounting Ring
Conex Damper with Damper Ring
Lead Wires Integrated into Damper for High Reliability and Improved Power Transfer
Oversized Glass-Imide Voice Coil Bobbin
Projected Pole Yoke with Vented Pole
High-Energy Strontium Magnet with Bumped Back Plate
Low-Q Design for use in Small Sealed Box (1.5 cubic foot recommended)
500 Watts Max Music Power
160 Watts Nominal Power Handling
Frequency Response: 18-2,000Hz
Sensitivity (Efficiency): 93dB (1W/1m)
4 Ohm Rated

So you need a 1.5 cubit foot SEALED box per sub, an amp running 100-120 watts per channel (RMS) (400w peak), at 4ohms for a nice sensible setup
Tht spec is from Pioneer direct.. I always prefer sealed boxes anyway...

Paul have you actually mentioned its going in a cabriolet ??
