Default Found Out Why The Cos Is Slow...

Well yesterday I thought I would go investigating to find the tapping noise which started last week and found one of the cam caps threads were fooked. So I decided while I waited for Sutton Rebore to come out and sort it (Thursday morning) I would do the inlet manifold gasket...

Anyway, removed the top bolts on the manifold and the thing literally dropped down... Pulled the manifold out the way and found this:

Turns out the bottom of the cylinder head has snapped away with the manifold, so she had one serious air leak... Wondered why she was slow :lol :lol :lol So we're taking the head off atm and gonna sort out a few things while I find out if the head can be sorted or will have to be replaced!!

We're gonna take it to an ally welding place to see if they can do anything. If not I will be head hunting

Darren, get the head back and sell it to me

Fletch,
In all my 12 years with Cossies, I have never seen that .

However, your head was ported and the car mapped to suit the flow etc, so you can't just bolt on a standard head . You MUST salvage that head or you will have to have a remap as well...

Never seen anything like that before. looks like a good alloy welder should be able to sort it for you, then get it machined back to fit.

did you have the little 90 degree support bracket between inlet manifold and engine mount?

is the alloy engine mount bracket fitted tightly to the block?

"You MUST salvage that head or you will have to have a remap as well... "

I know cheers Mike. JB was impressed with the work done to it. So the head is almost off. Gonna take it to local place to see what they can do with it, if not Ive had a very kind offer from someone on here to do the work for me

Tempted to just do everything I want now she's off road, which includes bigger turbo, injectors, new rad and intercooler, then a remap

Ive personally never seen a head do this either

As mentioned above, my Cos is missing the support bracket for the inlet manifold, so the combination of 400bhp and my stupid driving, changing gears like Im riping the box out has caused it

Head is down at the local ally welders atm with me bro, and they reckon they can sort it out. Will wait and see what happens

Rhy's, part number and price will be online this afternoon

Dave, not sure how long its been like this mate, but oil temps have gone above normal recently and she's not been running right at all, so hopefully once this is sorted she will be back to normal Then I can get back down Sutton and wipe the smiles off some people's faces again

I had to make my own bracket for this. But then the stud that goes thro' the bracket into the throttle housing snapped at some time. Didn't think it was that important, but obviously is by the look of that

Finis code is 1658570 and it was meant to be £2.27 + VAT if Ford's could get it

Here's a pic taken from the Cosworth Manual.

Dingy, mines running a WRC head gasket aint it?? Are they re-usable? Would prefer not to reuse it, but Im strapped for time as the Cos is in me garage and Ive got a shed load of work to do on other people's cars and need it out

That bracket definately aint there tho. Someone must of took it off somewhere along the line! Atleast we now know it has a purpose and should be fitted

I wouldn't recommend re-using a head gasket and yes it should be a 4 layer WRC item.
