Default Operating temperature

Hi all,

I was wondering what people think the maximum water temp should be when thrashing the car around on a track day? It's a 2WD cossie engine.

I regularly experience the temp going up to 105 degrees after a few laps, at which point I cool the car and come in to the pits. Is this too hot or should I not be worried?

Thanks

Matt

What have you done cooling wise to help keep temperatures down? Large RS 500 size intercooler, high flow larger size alloy radiator, pre turbo cooler, cooler thermostat,Samco or similar hoses, and check the fans are switching in when they should. You should'nt really have any overheating problems after just a couple of laps.

Just put an alloy rad in from radtec, but at the same time have put a bigger turbo in. Not yet tried it yet. Beforehand it was just the standard cossie radiator, running 4wd intercooler. Havent got anything else, dont think there is space as it is in a mk3 fiesta. Any further help would be appreciated, hoping the alloy rad makes a big difference despite the new turbo!

I wondered if the Cosworth engine was in a different car. I guess space is pretty limited but a bigger intercooler is a must especially now you have fitted a bigger turbo. The new Radtec radiator will help. Is there room on top of it to fit a pre-turbo cooler?Ducting for cool air to the engine bay will also help. Maybe there is someone else on this forum that has done the same engine swap in their Fiesta who can swap ideas?

That would be handy, thanks for your help! The intercooler sits on top of the rad currently, potentially I can find a way of mounting something in front of the radiator, the rs500 intercooler wont fit though. To be fair though at the remap he said intake temps were absolutely fine from the intercooler, only running 350 bhp

Was the remap done before you fitted the new bigger turbo? What power will it be running at now? The 4x4 intercooler is better than the standard 2wd one but still nothing like as good as a bigger one. Even if some fabrication work is needed I would try to fit a bigger intercooler.

Nah just had the remap done, recent changes are new 650cc injectors, new bosch 044 fuel pump, new t34 0.55 hybrid turbo, new alloy rad and fans, new 3.5bar map sensor and a gearbox rebuild, had to have a new map done for obvious reasons. Got a track day booked on 13th Nov so hoping it stays a bit cooler than before, just concerned that as I am running more power and higher boost it will cancel the effect of the new rad haha

You are right, the more power and higher boost will have an effect but there is still no reason for the engine to overheat. Sounds like you have got a good set-up and a Fiesta with 350bhp must be fun.

haha yeah it's a good laugh, rear wheel drive and traction isnt great so it's a handful! Il see how it goes I guess. Is 105 degrees too hot then? What should the water temp be when getting thrashed?

My 2wd Saff is 450bhp and with the measures I have taken even when being pushed hard I have;nt had any overheating problems. I don't have loads of additional gauges in mine so I don't really know if 105 degrees is to hot. I just have the standard Saff temp gauge.
