Default Camshaft damage, advice please (pics added)

Was supposed to be having the timing belt done today on my puma 1.7 engine while its out.
A mate of mine offered to do it but while doing it I seen him damage the end of the camshaft, basically because from what I can tell he had the locking bar in place while trying to loosen off the cam pulleys, this caused the end off the shaft to chip off where the locking tool was. he immediately said 'can't do it now' and left. So I'm left with a damaged cam and no cam belt as he took the old one off.
here's the pics what do you think?

Not ideal but still looks like it could be doable unless the person doing it is utterly handless.

Best not let your friend back near it. Nice of him to fuck off and leave you in the shit.

If you want to go to the additional expense and work of a replacement cam and all it entails....then yes.

If not, then no.

Seems crystal clear to me ?

You seem to want to fit a new camshaft, even though you've already been told it is not necessary.

The bit that's broken serves no purpose other than for locking the cam in place when setting the cam position.
It's NOT to be used when loosening / tightening the Crankshaft bolt.

As above - There's a special tool that locks into the pullies to slacken the pulley bolts.

Bit late now. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-ROTU...-/111989188349

cheaper version https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LASER-TOO...gAAOSwX~dWomAl

Agree with stevietubo's posts

in an ideal world it needs a cam but you could get away without.

Seen this happen mAny times working in garages over the years, happened once to myself stupidly but we all live and learn and I certainly didn't make that mistake again! As long as the broken piece is retrieved then it causes no harm at all as that part is only for the locking of the cams. Nice of him to fook off and leave you in the shit though! Easily remedied

Sorry read it wrong thought your posted those links as timing tools

Theres a hex on each camshaft to hold with a spanner while tightening/undoing

I've done the same thing with a Focus . I couldn't just fuck off tho ! By the looks of it you can still get the timing bar I the end of the Cam so you should be still good . I'd use a pair grips to hold the cam when you nip the pulley bolt up

I def wouldn’t be buying/fitting a new cam just for that.
That broken part is irrelevant really.

Any decent mechanic could time that up how it is and it not be an issue

Cheers Paul

The important thing is did it break off cleanly in one piece so no small bits of metal have gone into the engine.?

I did something similar to a fiesta when the crank locking tool slipped and the engine turned while I was loosening the crank pulley bolt.

I retrieved the broken bits off both camshafts and I was still able to time the engine up and complete the job.

Get a manual, whatch a few vids and have a go yourself. It’s not like you could do much worse yourself.

They are easy to do, there’s a hex on the camshaft to hold with a spanner

easy if you know what your doing, ill do basic things to the car myself but things like this are best left to a pro Imo. I don't fully understand it really, I've only got to get it slightly wrong and I've caused myself a load of grief. If a so called mechanic has fucked it up already what chance do i have at getting it right!

Glenn, very detailed information which for someone with good mechanical skills is probably straight forward but for st220kyle may be, as he has said pretty difficult ,so he will be happier to get it sorted out by a proper qualified mechanic.

Its just the flooting crank pulley that scares me on these engines lol.

I've worked on cars/Van's since I left school in 1995 and to this day I'm still not keen on doing timing belts.

The great thing is with all the pulleys able to rotate getting the new belt in is a doddle. Where as fixed pulleys some if them can be a reet pain.
