right....
compression results are..

soooooo.....we took the head, etc off to see the revealed FOOOOOKED piston...
and all we got was this...
4 pistons....with no DET marks, no scouring on bores, no nothing...smooth as silk!!!!

You normally do the compression test 'dry' - as is. Then you can do it again 'wet' by putting a small amount of fresh oil or Redex down the bores (via plugholes) - if the figures vary between the two tests, it'll possibly give you a clue to the problem.
http://www.pumaracing.co.uk/comp.htm have a read of that too.
If any cylinders are low then a "wet" test can be done. This involves squirting a few ccs of oil into the cylinder and repeating the test. The oil will help seal bad rings and increase the reading but won't affect it if the problem lies in the valves or head gasket. Copyright David Baker and Puma Race Engines

Sorry to hijack, but you say theres no det marks? what do they look like?
dont forget you can test the valves are seating properly by putting some suitable liquid down the ports

Keith have you also turned the bottom over now the head is off and check the height of the pistons. that way you can check for a bent rod (in your engine that is
boy)
Keith here goes my theory so dont laugh
:
If your turbo has been leaking oil and run you out of oil the cam could wear heavily and knock the tips of the lobes off and kill the hydrolic tappets.
what everyone reckon ?

I took apart my old XR engine last week and one piston had loads of tiny tiny dents in the top. My only explaination for this was det, but Ive not seen it before.

take the pistons out and you will probably find that they have cracked between the rings this happend on one of my old turbos
they look ok from top but when taken out they were all cracked

Was just thinking exactly the same thing about the tappets, I've had it before where the cams actually worn through the bottom of the tappet causing zero compression on that cylinder
