Default Anodising Metal?

Just wondering, how resiliant is anodising to tempratures?

For example, if you get an Ally rad/intercooler and anodise it to say black, how would that effect the rad/intercoolers efficiency?

And would the anodising stand up to high temps? Or just fade?

Anodizing will stand upto a blow torch for a short period of time, so it will easily cope with <120degC found in a car radiator mate.

As for how effectivly black dispureses heat over a silver surface, they seem to do the trick since all car radiators/intercoolers etc are black as std! Im sure the physicists will let you know more.

You bufties! What does it matter if anyone notices it? It's all about how it performs...

Heat is dissipated from a body by two principal phenomena. Convection and radiation. Convection means that the heat is transfered and carried away by the air flowing through it. Radiation has everything to do with how much it's temperature is above the ambient temperature about what is the relative emissivity of the material surface. The relative emissivity of a silver reflecting surface is minimal and thus it will radiate heat away poorly (On the other hand if it is cooler than ambient temperature, it will also heat up by radiation poorly). A black surface has a relative emissivity reaching 1 and thus is the perfect surface for heat radiation as long as it's a hotter body than the other bodies surrounding it. Ideally you'd want to have the rad silver facing the turbo. Then the IC and rad's font side black.
Anyhow convection carries away by far the biggest part of the heat.

Great answer Jesse

The main reason I want to do it in black is to cordinate the engine bay with the rest of the car.

But, it sounds like it would have some great performance benefits too

And I hate shiny chrome and silver
