Default Cosworth air filter options/positioning...

With a group-A cone filter in the normal place it doesn't get much air flow (as in being directly behind the headlight) so was wondering if a foam filter would be less restrictive than a k&n cone one?

Does anyone add ducting to aim air at the usual air filter positioning area?

I've seen a few cossies in the past that have extended hoses and mounted the filter down behind the offside fog light hole (fog light removed obviously).

Again I've seen some with aluminium 'boxes' built around the filter area to avoid heat soak but airflow is still rubbish.

Anyone removed the filter completely and noticed a difference?

My car is 550hp so a standard air box is not an option, I'm also not keen on how they look

Cheers Paul

With the amount of cossies running that power and beyond with a cone filter in the standard position I'd imagine it's only an issue if you've got a crap intercooler mate

So you thnk a cone one in the standard place is the best option?
What about shrouding it?

The reason I ask is you see a lot of say drag cars that run turbos outside of the bodywork with no filters on at all.
Obviously this is fine on the drag strip but useless for the road.

My 2wd is only 450bhp but I have had a group A aluminium air box with a ITG cotton cone filter inside it and have not had any problems with it restricting the air flow.
One of the reasons I fitted it was years ago I put a brand new T35 hybrid turbo on and ran it with a high flow cone filter. I was horrified when I took the filter off just 2 weeks later and the compressor blades were already peppered with marks from small debris sucked through it.
The groupA airbox eliminates that problem and also keeps it cooler.

That looks smart mate, I'd consider making some kind of custom shroud/box for the cone filter.
It's just air flow to it...

Or maybe look a putting it behind the bumper/fog light hole. I believe Mark King has that kinda setup on his 4wd saff.

Maybe just ducting to it would be a bonus as Glenn mentioned.

Just trying to improve on the normal setup really.

Like I said I have 550hp but that will be increasing to 620-650hp early next year.

Blimey Paul I think your Saff will be mental with over 600bhp! Mine goes hard with just 450 but cant imagine another 150bhp on top. What gearbox and diffs are you using to get all that power down?

On My Pug 205 I have a YB and I have managed to get an air filter right in front of the cam belt cover so the fresh air comes straight in through the front grill.

I am sure I saw a hole in the inner wing on Rod's car, that makes sense and that way you can shroud it from the engine heat.

I'm hoping so too mate ha ha!

Got a rebuilt modded supra rear diff whith the MT cover on it and a quaife straight cut, big tooth box that has a few custom ratios.

It's basically already prepped for the power increase its just the turbo holding it back now.

Sounds interesting, I'll try and look at some pics of Rod's cars bay.

I've seen a few mounted similar to that on 3drs whey it's been positioned on top of the intercooler infront of the rad, it's a good place for airflow but wondered about heatsoak from the rad

I had wondered about the heat soak. I am planning on boxing mine so that it acts like a ram air and should isolate it. This is easier on my car as it is a highly modified car, I guess you might not want to mod a real cossie too much unless it can be reversed the way values are going.

Yeah kind of, I don't mind a bit of modding but I don't really wanna cut huge holes in the inner wings

Sounds like a good set up which will cope well with the power.

It's purely a track car so I was allowed to modify slam panel to suit but direct cold feed with internal bellmouth on turbo and replaceable air filter foam panel filter

MK very nicely made bit of kit. The only thing I would say is make sure the foam filter is dense enough to prevent small debris/dust/dirt being sucked straight into the turbo and peppering the compressor blades.

The shield ducts air from the front not easy to see on the pict. The inner wing is drilled out with 20mm holes to draw in air from underneath. Closing the bonnet shields the airfilter from underbonnet heat. This system was used at 850bhp for many years & will still be used with the new engine.

Hi mate

The foam is sandwiched both sides by some grill mesh so that if anything likes stone or chunk of rubber on track hits it, there should be no issues with the turbo eating anything, I run the same set up on my fiesta and so far it's been fine and o issues with small debris either

I was lucky enough to get a certain Arton Sennas fabricator to make my Shield. Told him what I wanted & that's what he fitted. Has several more holes drilled in the 13 years since. It may give you ideas.

This is lovely!

Bit of work gone not that!

I can see the deflector that's aiming air from across the front of the timing cover area.

That's more the thing I was considering tbh.

And the holes in the inner wing suck up more air?

Cheers Paul
