Default Atlas Axle Diff

Hi all

Newbie to the forum

Im hoping someone can help with a guide to rebuilding a diff on an atlas lsd axle.
I bought a P100 with a 2.9 cologne engine in it with an atlas axle.

The axle is weeping at the half shaft ends so i pulled those to find the bearings had been replaced but fitted the wrong way round.
This worries me so would like to rebuild the diff so i am confident in it.

Im useful with the old spanners and old enough not to rush in

Mods please move if in wrong section as i couldn't find one to suit

Thanks in advance Rich

Hi gjh

Thanks for the reply.

I had seen that post when i did my hundreds of searches

I was hoping that someone might have a list of the process to go through like step by step.

Apparently its not complicated you just have to be careful and precise.

Cheers Rich

Chances are the diff itself and bearings will be fine, have just pulled a 2.8 capri one apart to rebuild and the bearing are still perfect even though its done 200K+ mileage. The weaping half shafts will be where the axle has worn where the bearings sit, to stop this you can now get slightly over size bearings that stop the leaking, if the shafts were easy to pull out then the axle is worn, their normally tight and need a pullers to remove them.

New halfshaft bearings fitted correctly and fully cleaned axle tubes and some sealer around will resolve this issue.

Hardest job is to get the bearings off the actual diff. Make sure all shims remain on the same sides. Fit new bearings.
Pinion is also easy to remove but you will need a new crush washer. Pinion needs to be torqued up to spec. Any cortina/capri haynes manual will have specs for torques.
Refit diff and check for backlash and teeth contact using engineers blue.
Should be all ok if not it will require removal of bearings and adjust shims to suit which can be tricky.
Search for lea123 on turbosport he can do them if you don't fancy it. Also many trnasmission place will do it.

Hi

Thanks for that

Might just try to get hold of a Capri manual I hadn't thought of that

I have a place that rebuilds axles about 40 miles away but its the cost I'm trying to avoid
Plus I do like to do my own spannering

This is my problem

If i think it might have been fiddled with I feel I need to look.
If the other issues hadn't been there like wanky electrics etc I would rest easy.

Maybe ill just pull the prop and spin the wheels around to see if there is any noise or play on the diff.
Really need to sort the weeping ends out sooner rather than later so looks like the weekend will be busy.

Thanks for the replies I appreciate it.
