Default Car insurance madness

Just done an insurance quote on a new focus RS, £30 cheaper than my 5 year old diesel cmax! How do they work this out then? I thought it would be a horrendous price.

They've got no data to work out the rates.
They can only use historic data from the previous model plus a bit of guesswork.

Wait till the RS start ending up in ditches and being stolen, the insurance will soon go up.

I've always found newer performance cars cheaper to insure.

Even with the ex when she started driving.
Daft quotes for a laugh on Aston Martins, Ford GT's etc always came cheaper than fiestas etc.

Very strange.

I suppose it could be the thought that your going to drive more carefully with your good car than with your cheap old banger?

Admiral wanted £89 extra to swap the cover from my Escort GTI to a same age, same mechanics, Escort Si (a runaround whilst I get busy on the GTI). This is on a multi-car policy with the wife's Frogmobile.

To their credit, the call agent challenged the fee several times on my behalf and got it down to £20. Which is not bad as the T&Cs do say there's a £25 admin to move cover to another car (plus any extra risk cover).

Generally all these companies (mobiles, insurance, telephone/BB, credit cards etc.) which operate in a very competitive market will fight to keep you as a customer. Many of us have have generous offers from the 'retention department'. Never hurts to ask and keep asking if the madness is not in your favor.

As already said, it isn't just cheaper to insure an older and/or slower car as often viewed as higher risk if you drive a shitter over a brand new 'pride and joy' car. Added to the fact that vehicle secuity has (well supposed to) increased then insurance prices are all over the place.

I'm looking at getting a dedicated classic policy for my saff instead of just having it on my trader policy and was pleasantly surprised with the £175 quote yesterday!
