Default GPS module over CAN for aftermarket ECU?

My ECU does some really detailed logging in my car, but I would really like to add a couple of extra channels for X/Y so that it makes it quicker when looking back over data to work out what corner I was on (plus if Im ever sad enough to do a video overlay from a trackday its nice for a map)

Anyone know of a little standalone module that will chat over CAN to give GPS co-ords? (plus presumably co-ords, accuracy, speed etc I assume)

Think Racelogic does but I presume you wouldn't want the expense of that on top lol.

No I already have traction control capabilities in the ECU to start with.

The latest Race Technology DL1 with some options will do it, but thats 850 quid or so, which is a bit steep when all I want is a pair of co-ordinates.

I could use something like harrys lap timer and merge the data of course, but thats quite a big of hassle (especially in terms of syncing)

How much you looking to spend ?

And really...whilst there are many options, you'll obviously need to configure the two CAN streams so one understands the other.

What ecu is it ? and do they offer anything ?

Syvecs one here

http://bbs.22b.com/forums/showthread...ade-GPS-sensor

These guys do stuff for Motec ( and no doubt Motec sell their own too )

My Plex SDM500 dash transmits GPS and accelerometer data back to my Syvecs over CAN ( not cheap either )

Toucan Tim will have his I/O expander for Syvecs ready soon, and it has GPS/Accelerometer built in as far as I know. Again you'll need to make one CAN understand the other depending on your ecu. From provisional pricing, this looks very good ( no real info available yet, but he is testing it on one car at the minute )

The Ecu is a MaxxEcu.

In terms of price, I dont really have a specific budget in mind, race technology can do it for me for 850 quid, so no point spending more than that and would ideally like to spend far less if I can.

The ECU already has triple accelerometers built into its traction module which I have, its literally just the GPS co-ords than I am missing.

In terms of getting it working, I can probably just post it to sweden and let the ECU manufacturers sort it out if I find a suitable product as they are always keen to help and im sure other users of their ECU would enjoy having this as an option too, or if not Im sure I will get lets of help from them on the CAN side of things anyway remotely.

Give Tim a shout, he might be able to help via his I/O expander, although not sure how quickly.

Or this guy seems to DIY a lot of stuff, and might have an idea how to

VEMS seem to do stuff via either bluetooth ( some using there phone as the gps although it would be slow ) or serial if that might be any use ?

If Tim will be doing a CAN based one then that sounds ideal, im not in a massive rush anyway.

Would prefer to have a neat solution than having to use a serial GPS one and then a serial to CAN converter if I can.

Thanks for your help by the way Stevie, been most useful!

His I/O expander is specifically aimed at Syvecs and that's where he's testing it.

But the Toucan display also started out that way and migrated to a few other platforms. So it would be worth speaking to him in case it may be a dead end aimed at Syvecs only.

It shouldnt be, as CAN is CAN, it would need an interpreter so to speak to make it talk to something else even if Tim wasnt doing it.

Or he may well know of a more generic GPS module on its own ?

EFI101 forum always a good place to ask too.
