Default Vehicle tax - direct debit

I recieved this email on the 20th of this month, my tax is due 1st Feb.

Important: Confirmation of your successful

Direct Debit instruction

Dear Mr David Christie

Vehicle registration number: M3OKO
Thank you for arranging to pay the vehicle tax by Direct Debit.

Please can you check that the details below, and your payment schedule are correct:
  • Account name: *****
  • Account number: *********
  • Bank sort code: *******
If any of the above financial details are incorrect please contact your bank as soon as possible.

However, if your details are correct you don’t need to do anything and your Direct Debit will be processed as normal. You have the right to cancel your Direct Debit at any time. A copy of the Direct Debit Guarantee is included with this letter.

Enclosed is a schedule of your Direct Debit payment showing the amount and date for collection. We recommend that you retain this schedule for your records. You do not need to wait for the first payment to be taken before the vehicle is used on the road.

For your information, the collection will be made using this reference, and this is how your payment will be detailed on your bank statements:
  • DVLA Identifier: 295402
  • Reference: M3OKO
Your vehicle tax will automatically renew unless you notify us of any changes. We will send a new payment schedule at the time of renewal.
Yours sincerely

Now, I dont remember agreeing to payment of my vehicle tax by direct debit, could I have ticked a box last year for an automatic renewal and i've just forgot? how can they assume I want to pay it all in a one'r without giving me the option?

I usually get a letter through the door and I go online and pay it....

Any idea's??

Mine came through like this. I just paid it in one for the year as usual with no effort required.

For once a good system!

Not a hope in hell would I ever give any government body direct access to my bank to take money out.

Nothing but a bunch of robbing bastards who can't be trusted.

Obviously you must have given them your bank details at some point ?

They've only got my bank details when i've payed for vehicle tax last year, otherwise i've gave them no instruction to set up a direct debit.

Gave them a ring, appears i've either ticked a box to set up a DD last year but the email makes it sound like i've done it recently....

I cant remember what I had for dinner last week never mind what I done last year. ohwell it needs paying anyway so guess it makes it easier to not forget...

Typical this is, They won't take my money to tax my car as they are claiming I need a test cert which I already have.

They forgot to take my dd for month so was driving around untaxed. Rang them and they didn't have a clue why they hadn't, wonder who's fault it would have been if I didn't contact them and left it
