Hi I've got a golf mk5 1.9 tdi 2004 recently the air con gave up the ghost so I took it too a local garage for a re gas and they didn't charge me for it because they said the compressor is in a nut shell f?cked so I purchased a second hand one from eBay got this one fitted which was also identical to the so called f?cked one any I've had the system re gassed and still no air con so today an electrician said to remove the power cable and test what voltage is going to the compressor he did this which is just over 10.25 volts he also tested the battery which was 12volts then 14 volts when I switched the engine on daft question do I need just the wire loom for £38 which VW quoted me please help Geoff

Is it hissing when you try to use it?
Does it hold pressure when you try to gas it?
How did they identify the compressor was broken?
What voltage should it operate on?

No hissing and it holds it's pressure mate all I've been told is the compressor should operate at 12v an air specialist has told me to do the 12v test direct from the battery while the engine is running so I can hear the compressor kick just to make sure it is working but I don't know how to do this as yet

VW don't make the air con compressor, but don't let that get in the way.
Get a fully charged battery and run a wire straight to it. It could be something simple like the low pressure switch thinking it has no gas.

Plus if you do buy second hand make sure you get the right one, think there are two makes.
If I was you I'd ring the local mobile air con man to come round.

Golfs of this age do suffer from the hi pressure switch failing on the AC.
As above though it needs checking out properly, the compressor may well be f*cked..
