Default transit connect problem selecting reverse ?

For the last 5/6 weeks my connect has been hard to get into reverse every other gear selects fine. At a guess i would say sometimes it can take ten attempts to select reverse. It makes no difference if the engine is running or switched off.
I have fitted a new Luk clutch kit including slave cylinder and a new gear selector cable, but still the problem is there.
So i'm guessing there must be an issue inside the gearbox ? If it's the box am i better off trying to source a second hand box or try to get my one repaired ?

It's a 1.8 transit connect 230L TDCi 90bhp

Any ideas ?

Sounds like the synchromesh on reverse gear. You can get it rebuilt for around Ł250 or chuck a secondhand one in for about Ł100.

No i haven't is there much to go wrong ? Just thought as its selecting all other gears fine it would more likely to be inside the box

It has a series of sliders which control the individual gear and I've know something to break and get in the way of the reverse push down/lift up motion I.e reverse switch/spring/slider,
It's worth a check incase a Ł5 reverse switch is stopping you from selecting reverse or a worn selector

Did you check the turret on top of the gearbox. Is there any play in the plastic balls on the gear stick.

Both the balls at the gearstick seem fine not any play at all that feels wrong, so i think maybe try the selector on the box ?

Its the part that sits on top of the box. The gear cables go to it. If its not the turret it must be something in the box.

Checked that earlier and goes into all gears fine so it must be inside the box.

Must be inside the box then. If your gonna take the box out I reckonmend dropping the gearbox mounts off but have a jack under the box then use a scissor jack and put at the back of the engine and subframe and wind the engine forward so that the box clears the corner of the sub frame.

Changed the box at the weekend and it's perfect so maybe it was a worn syncro for reverse ..

Hi mate ,

I am experiencing the exact same problem after picking up my 2007 transit connect a few days ago. My van will not go into reverse.

I suspected the clutch as I also had a small clunk when changing from first to second only , but the guy reckons he will throw in another gearbox and it will be fine.

Did this solve your issues ? I hope it solves mine!

Cheers

Mitch
