At 400hp I would steel rods and forged pistons , cat cams valve springs a pair of good manifolds and a dry sump system.

If I was building an engine from scratch, I'd forge it anyway.. I know decent power seems to be doable on standard internals, but for peace of mind, while its sitting on a stand and in bits... for a few hundred quid, it's worth sticking in decent internals to future-proof it surely.

Cheers,
Gant

For upto 350bhp the ST170 bottom end with a black top head will do nicely for little money.
My guide if it is of any help to you is here... https://passionford.com/forum/ford-e...onversion.html

A std focus rs engine and turbo will do 330bhp with a live map, decent inter cooler and a Decat.

Think there's one on eBay for a grand

frs 1.8mm h/g
black top head
st170 valve springs/ or devil developments ones for piece of mind
frs gt25 turbo or 4x4 cosworth t3

No need for a dry sump at less than 400bhp IMO. I'm not anyway and plenty others been fine.
