Default 106 gti hunting on hot idle.

Lad at work has a '97 106 Gti,1600 16v, he's bought it cheap with a fault that the seller has had a few garages look at but not cure.

Once it's hot and left to idle, it starts hunting, and if you hold it about 3000rpm stationary it's not running cleanly, full throttle is fine apparently down the road.

Looks like TPS has been changed, fuel pump in tank too, no obvious air leaks on the intake, believe he's tried a map sensor on it. Our generic Delphi code reader that works on most things won't communicate with ECU so no idea of any DTCs, wondering if it's anything you guys have come across?

Any common issues with these?

Apart from it's a French POS?

maybe sumfin or maybe nuffin but
i had 1 of these in for repair a year or so ago,
was a completely differant prob(wasn't firing the coilpack properly)
turned out to be an ecu fault,
tracked down a2nd hand ecu from a pug specialist breaker
and when speaking to him he was asking me if the car had "idling issues"?
as apparently thats why he usualy sells ecu's as its a known common fault
i didnt ask any more about what kind of issues he meant as it wasn't relevant to my problem
but if its a known ecu fault then possibly it could whats wrong with your mates?
as i said maybe nothing but it sprang to mind there as soon as i read the post

take the stepper motor out and clean the seat where it seals in the throttle body and the end of the plunger as well, dont move the plunger in or out as you will have to re calibrate the idle afterwards which if you cant communicate with the ecu you wont be able to do and it will idle about 3000rpm lol

Funny you should say that

Forgot to mention in my original post, he took the stepper motor apart and as you say it now idles at 3000rpm.

So not as easy as just fitting another stepper motor then?

jamie's I did wonder about an ECU fault too.
Maxwell, I will see if the CPS has been changed too.

Cheers!

Happened with my old vts. Naturally changed the tps. Still done idle hunted. Few weeks later car wouldnt start at all. Changed crank sensor as it showed sympthoms like a previous vts i had. Not only did the car start again when new crank sensor was fitted, but it never idle hunted again!!

If he needs an ecu, i have an unlocked single plug ecu here

Cool, he knows it's had bits and bobs changed but exactly what he's not sure - least it's some ideas to go on.

I'm not sure what ECU it's got on, didn't take too much notice.

Will check.

lol, if you know someone with a snap on modus or similar snap on scanner you should be able to reset. just go into actuator tests and actuate the stepper motor with the engine off and it will reset it

Mine used to do the same and it ended up being a coolant temp sensor - It happens on a lot of the 1.1's too.

Couldn't find a code reader that worked so I ended up finding the test procedure (Autodata if I remember rightly? Was years ago) and checked the resistance.

MAP sensors also fuck up pretty spectacularly! Mine would be absolutely fine one second then the car wouldn't do a thing, wouldn't even rev up. Changed the MAP and all was fine.
