Default Calling all subaru guys

Guy i know took his car down to a local subaru "specialist" for a sort out. Vacuum leaks for fun. Running a bit shit he said. The lad had been claiming all sorts of power from 350-370bhp thinks its all forged inside with bigger turbo and i can see is a front mount , etc etc. We all know these lads . Anyway he text me today sayin he got his car back. I took ages to get the power out of him

He said they had to turn the power down to 290bhp !! Wtf ?

They said to get more power he would have to go aftermarket ecu as the standard one is limited ! Very vague i know

How true is this. Sounds like bull to me, but then i know nothing really of scoobys. Btw its a p reg wrx sti import he tells me.

Whats your thoughts ??

Yea i know mate. Why would they turn it down. They said it needed a new MAF sensor at Ł550 then said that wasnt the problem. The lad is just pub talk. But i cant imagine a sti ecu being limited to 290 ???

The tuner he took it to has big power scoobys that run 10's !

Dunno what it be limited to tbh but seems abit low. I remember when my dad had 350 ish bhp In His Evo he had a new ecu apexi.
Anyway it just dont make sence if it was running 370 bhp okay then why bother Turing it down now?

From what I can work out is,

1) he's a bullshitting twat?
2) they turned down the boost as it was on its limits?
3) he doesn't know his elbow from his arse
4) he's a bullshitting twat?

But I'll give him the benefit of the doubt

He probably doesn't understand it himself? But you'd have to be a rather special boy to not understand where 80 bhp went

As far as know that ecu cant be mapped without chip or daughter board.
Car would be round 280 standard

pub talk, 350-370 bhp scooby,
more like it was pretty standard with front mount and bleed valve
turner prob turned the boost down cause it was ready to melt
guy sounds like a believer in the "crank the boost for extra 100bhp" kinda guy
its running twice the factory boost so must be twice the factory power
prob felt fast so just believed it must be that power, down to earth with a bang now
sti should be able to go more than that totaly standard so prob isn't a real sti(like most classic sti's advertised)
either he's fool of shit, or somebody else has been and he's been silly enough to believe it

hes talking shit. unless he paid big money for a proper scooby with different ecu etc as its hard getting power out of them on that management.or just ring the tuner and ask lol

As said the classic impreza needs a daughter board to remap, do you know what turbo its on?

mine a 2001 bugeye at 240hp, and if i do a full decat and remap on the TD04 ill see about 270-280bhp and 320lbft, but my ecu can be remapped as it is.

i take it he went to engine tuner (alan jeffery) in plymouth? they are pretty good with imprezas, so if they are saying its 290hp then it must be near standard!

for the claimed power he was running he will need a different turbo, but there are so many that fit you would need to know exactly what he has to determine wether or not the car could make the power suggested

Fudgeys hit the nail on the head.
STi is around 280bhp standard, UK Turbo 2000 are booked at around 220bhp but usually dyno nearer 240bhp. If its an STi it *should* have a red inlet, rear wiper and alloy wishbones (for quick visual identification)

Just rub your chin next time he starts talking about big power

280bhp is about the limit for a TD04, if its a TD04 then its more than likely a Turbo 2000!!
If it is an STi it should have the front entry VF23 or VF24 dependant on if its a V3 or a V4 STi. 330bhp is about max for those.

Top entry TD05 as fitted to early STis is capable of circa 350bhp

(all max power claims are approx btw )

Poor old deluded Scooby owner by the sounds of it. Sounds like an old mate of mine telling me about his 300bhp Rover 620Ti. Nugget forgot it was me that fitted his dump valve for him and dropped him at PowerFlow to pick the car up after the back box was fitted.

Yeah, trouble is you get both on a P reg!!

I *think* the only visual difference between V3 and V4 is the addition of 4 pot brakes on the V4 however these are easily retro-fitted to non 4 pot models.....

if the chassis number is only 10 digits on the bulkhead it an inport, if its 17 its a uk car

have a look on the top og the cylinder heads, STi`s have a cross hatch casting mark and have solid lifters and should be 280bhp standard

close ratio gearboxes with 4.44 diffs IIRC and take off like a scolded rat

When I had my impreza type r back in 2005-2007 I spent best part of Ł10k on engine mods to get it over the 400bhp mark...
Dunno if things are still the same but I'm sure back then 1997-1998 impreza ecus weren't able to remap them, only way to get more out of them was with new management???

I remember when I first got my type r, was running a uprated 2 litre short block built by Teg sport, walbro pump, vf34, gems ecu... Etc
That then was running around 330bhp max...

That did bottom end within 2 months of me buying it!!!

Ł10k later
Ej22t short block, uprated pistons, rods, 2.5 litre crank... Making it a 2.35 litre.
Md321t turbo, uprated headers, down pipe, fmic, 800cc injectors, baffled sump, Adaptronics ecu, inlet spacers...
A few other parts here and there... And the bloody thing still started to slip a uprated clutch at 22psi!!!
Was built to do 500bhp...

Haha, I'm not sure about your dyno figures for UK Turbos mate... I've been to many R/R days through various Subaru/Non Subaru clubs and standard cars (mine/others) don't really tend to do 25-30bhp over standard without modifications.

Alan knows what he's talking about, so I'd assume he's 'turned it down' with good reason. Wouldn't surprise me if it had a Fuel Cut Defender and bleed valve fitted, boosting to hell and ready for destruction.

You don't get a V4 on a P-reg.. R-reg is the earliest. The easiest way to tell between a V3 and V4 will be a completely different dashboard, since the V4 got the facelift 98-01 dashboard with MOMO steering wheel.

You can get the V4 in 97, granted on an R reg though so my mistake. They didn't get the facelift dash and Momo wheel until late 1998 when they upgraded the front bumper and grill, which is V5 and 6

Sorry bud, you're wrong on this one.

You got V4 (UK Turbo/WRX/STI) on R and very early S registrations. They we semi-crossover models, they retained the three bar bumper of earlier models, but got a facelift dashboard with a Momo wheel that had a dark badge and an early style rubber gear gaiter. Then later S registration onwards cars were V5/6 which had the two bar bumper, crystal headlights, more pronounced grill which sat over the bumper rather than tucked behind, leather gear gaiter and the Momo badge was smaller and had a lighter titanium/champagne coloured ring round Momo.

I've owned six Imprezas over the past 11 years, five of them being 98-00 Classics UK Turbos... it's rare I get to share my ultra-nerdy knowledge on them these days!!

Cheers,
Grant
