Default Replacement track day car

I have a track day car. Mk3 golf VR6

I am looking to upgrade/change to something a bit quicker.
Budget £2000-£2500

The golf is good I just feel that IV found its limit. And wanted to try something a bit quicker better handling etc.

Golf is a 2.8vr6 6branch stainless manifold. Fast road clutch. Silicone hoses. Strut brace. Rear cage. Buckets harnesses. Battery located in boot. Poly carb windows flocked dash. 17s with slicks. Coil overs.

Quick vid and picture.

Can't see you getting anything much quicker, in that price bracket TBH.

Buy a Clio 172 for £1k, then you'd have a fair bit of change to spend on making it quicker.

I can't really see a 328i being any quicker than the Golf out of the box, I think you'd have to spend quite a bit of cash on it.

That's the dilemma. Price bracket against what I already have. Looked at other hatch backs. 205 306 etc.

I think the Clio is probably one of the best value. It's going to be pretty light compared to a lot of things which will work in its favour, and it has reasonable power out of the box.

You might get a slightly ropey Civic Type-R? Cheap MX-5 and a turbo kit? MR2? 200SX? 306 GTi-6?

M3 would be good, but obviously might be a dog at that money. I suppose it only has to be mechanically sound really though.

Another option could be Civic VTI, an EG type one. Boring to look at, horrible inside, but 160bhp, double wishbones upfront, so could make a very good track car with some careful tweaks.

what use is nitrous on a track car ?

i got a clio 172 i need rid of asap if you want a car to make a project from as the tax has just ran out and gearbox is dead

i would then fit a VAG turbo engine to it and have a PROPER good track car that will cost around your budget

What about using your budget to making your golf quicker? Or I'd go for and early Evo like said!

Early Evo gearboxes are made by Cadburys aren't they?

Turbo the VR6, they sound looney.

Clio/Civic/GTI-6 and spend the rest of the money on decent suspension/tyres/brakes... and when I say decent suspension I mean a kit that hasn't got similar spring rates to a mattress

Clio all day for that money but it might be the same as what you have, Adam (Madgit) has a Clio and that was embarrassing more powerful cars. Or Steve the Beard has a Fiesta that showed everyone at Croft how its done when set up properly.

If you are mad enough to corner hard and push that little bit further then straight line speed is irrelevant ?

Are they? My dads 6 is running around 600 bhp with stand gear box but its probably on the limit. Suppose the 6 isn't an early Evo tho?

Simple answer = Nissan 200sx 2.0 S14 manual 94-99 model
Comes with
LSD
Quick rack steering
Easy to get 280 bhp
Find a set of 2nd hand white line anti roll bars (£130) and change the springs and sort the brakes out and off you go, might even have working aircon!

I just sold a really good one, rust free, fsh, low mileage for £2k was good round brands even as standard.

Clio won't be any quicker unless you spend huge money on engine or a transplant.

328i is a good choice, but will need diff change as they are really long geared for track work.

Might as well turbo/supercharge the VR6 for what a 20vt conversion costs, I had all the bits to turbo my mk2 VR6 track car until bad health took over and ended up selling the bits, would have been epic with a GT3582R on it!

Best thing I did to my mk2 VR6 was change the final drive from the long 3.3 to a 3.68 out of a mk3 16v (+ a Peloquin LSD)

M3s at that money will be rough.

Silvia S14 is a good shout actually, there's a guy on Northloop forum with an awesome one.

Decisions decisions haha.
I know a guy who breaks golfs audis etc and offered a 1.8 20vt with correct parts fly wheel gearbox etc to bolt straight in for about £400.
IV heard about changing final drive? What's involved in that. And just any 16v?

What's your paypal again?

Whilst I love them, it wouldn't be much quicker at all though.

A racing driver mate of mine, can do Brands in just under a minute in a standard Cup on road tyres. Haven't been yet myself

If you were to modify it, to shave a second off per lap would probably cost over a grand for that second. Once you've done the suspension mods, they get very expensive to extract power.

Cheap engine!

Final drive swap is basically get the innards from the mk3 Golf 16v 'box (DPA code I think) and put in the VR6 casing, all the gears are same ratios but the final drive is 3.68 rather than 3.39. Makes a hell of a difference to accel, when you bear in mind the standard VR6 ratios are that long you can do something daft like 110 in 3rd!

Mine (mk2) was a late 95 on engine from a Passat (OBD2) with Dougherty 268 cams, mk4 Sharan head gasket from an AMY engine which raises the compression to 10.5:1 (10.1 stock) United motorsport chip with 7200 limiter, Unorthodox alloy flywheel, Carbonio cold air intake, eBay 6 branch, 2 box Jetex 2.5 system. Was 216hp 181 lb/ft

Usual H&R coil overs, big 25mm front/28mm rear ARBs, wide track conversion using Passat wishbones etc and rear axle spacers. Safety Devices 'cage, OMP seats yada yada yada.

Been sat outside in bits since 2010.

Well my mate who breaks vags just got a cupra Ibiza with 1.8 20v KO3s turbo bigger injectors different ecu 2 rolling road print outs one with just under 250bhp with large inter cooler. Then the guy put a standard cooler back in because of air flow cooling and got 192bhp. Forge this that and the other parts. £600 with everything to fit the golf or £400 and mine. Can see the VR coming off eBay lol.
