Thank you sir, I stand corrected !
Having said that I could only vote for the Escort as I grew up with them and nothing will ever come close to the experience of my Mk1 RS 2000 !

Dont like Fords very much but am a Cosworth fan. The 3dr Cosworth was the orginal & still the most Iconic of the Cossies. It means i ticked the Sierra box.

hardly a car and not one of the choices from the newspapers voting criteria either even though its a fantastic van, nor is the bronzes and scooby slayers input as its says british fords between 1960-2010 none of which fit the bill

Well In that case it has to be the ford escort as it had the longest life and managed to have racing success and be a cheap affordable car to the masses. I think the majority of people you ask who were driving 20 years ago will have owned or had a family member who owned some sort of ford escort in there lives

As boring as it is, i'd have to say Mondeo.
I've had a mk 3 and mk 4 estate in the last 6 years and both have been faultless.
Comfy, surprisingly nice to drive, cheap to run and as reliable as you like.

For me i voted escort. Rally heritage of the mk1 and 2 swung it for me. Plus the RS's are iconic.
Sierra would be my second choice not much in it between them and the escort.
Fiesta and focus is up there too for me.
Focus for reliabilty etc.
Fiesta, who hasnt owned one or been in one! Plus Mk 1 and 2 are classics now and the rs turbo's are very sought after now!

I have voted escort, mainly because of the length of time it was in production, was close to picking a focus, wasn't it fords first 'world car' ( same model across the world) would have put mondeo as 3rd due to it being a good all round car.

I agree the sierra, as this poll is about which ford has done more for british motoring the sierra was the first mass production car to be designed with aerodynamics in mind and was designed using a wind tunnel which gave the sierra the lowest drag factor of any mass production car and set the book mark that all other manufactors were soon to follow which is why we have better handling better fuel consumption ect and all because of the old humble sierra which has changed the way cars are designed and perform not just here in britain but all over the world.

It has to be the Sierra for me as well.
Good choice of models throughout the range from the "rev it and it just gets louder and doesn't go faster diesels", through to the glides over speed bumps saloon/hatchback and load lugging estates, to the flagship Porsche bothering Cosworths of the 80's & 90's.
I still remember seeing it's replacement, the first Mondeo and thinking "Looks like a jellyfish on a roller skate" - Mind you, they drove quite well and have proved to be a good car to this date.

People slate fords but they have made some cracking cars over the years which other car manufactures have tried to copy.
look at the sierra cossies. They were quicker than most super cars when they were brought out.

I'm torn between Sierra and Cortina, because to me they are the SAME CAR. The Sierra was essentially a Cortina MkV (unless you count the 80 series as a V, in which case the Sierra becomes a VI).
Everything since those days has become the same bland 'slug' shaped car all other manufacturers are building. Ugly bulbous metal slugs with those stupid triangular headlamps and enormous swathes of chromed plastic covering each corner like a garish pound shop christmas tree bauble ... entirely lacking in taste and style.
It's a shame that the Zodiac wasn't in the list, because I loved those. For me, the most stylish of the list was the MkIII Cortina, although I will admit, i hated the dashboard, the later ones (1975-76) versions were much improved after the facelift, and continued into the later marques.
The technology of modern cars renders these old fossils as clumsy hulking great heaps of dangerousness, and who could argue that cars are so much better designed and manufactured nowardays. But I miss the chrome and wood, and I really think manufacturers are missing a trick by not offering it anymore. Silver-painted plastic just doesn't match it, and neither does the Formica crap they put in.
