Doing an article for local press as a follow up to Passionford's Ace Cafe day back in May, and they want a simple answer to this poll which ford has done more for british motoring from the 1960s to 2010 and have given me 8 choices, they want a general model answer such as fiesta, sierra etc not specific like RS or XR or its engine size, and the poll results wiil be published along with a healthy mention of passionford in the press at a later date this summer, so spent a few moments voting and feel free to give opinions why as best reply's will be quoted in the newspaper and credit will be given to author.

Shame about the shitty mondeo replacing the iconic sierra mondeo will go down in history as ford greatest flop

It bought us luxury motoring at an affordable price when Mercedes and BMW were priced just out of reach of the average British working man.
The available options on the early ghia models were on a par with such brands as rolls Royce and bently and although the "granny" wasnt available with a thumping great v8 under the bonnet the v6 engined models were ample in the performance department and still delivered mpg figures on the happy side of 25.
Of course fuel was sold by the gallon then and people weren't quite as concerned with mpg's as they are today.
For me the memories of whafting through the country lanes of Sussex and Surrey as a child in the chatsworth velour back seat (with no seat belt on )of my folks champagne gold 2.8ghia are little reminders of what I now realise was a very happy childhood.

Focus without a doubt.
It was streets ahead of it's time in so many ways and set standards in all areas that other manufacturers had to try to match, thus moving the whole market forward.
I've still got my 1998 Mk1 and every time I get into another medium/family car I ask "in what way is this overall better than the Focus?" and don't get a sensible answer after nearly 15 years have passed.
(though I think there's also a good case for the Cortina)

i wanted to say the mondeo, but then i read your example of what you wanted the reply to be about so i had to vote for the sierra

simply because it was the best of ALL worlds at the time, from areodynamics to load lugging, it was great in every way

I would say escort there were so many variation of performance models through the years.
My fave that i owned although not performance orientated was the escort gti had five of them and loved them. I love all escorts though.

Don't get how the Mondeo has been a flop for ford mate as they have and still are selling millions of them all over the world. If you mean it doesn't have the same status as the sierra I would agree but far from a flop.

By flop yes meant was supposed to take over where sierra left of.... but didn't happen also out of all the fords the mondeo has the biggest depreciation value of them all

got to agree with brad, granada for me! i can remember the bronze mk1 3.0 gxl my parents had was the first, then a mk1 3.0s fast for the time. then a 2.3l ( i think we were a bit skint) and a mk2 2.8 ghia sapphire when dad was made redundant.
i remember friends and family were amazed we had such a big car, and surprised by the ride.
my brother and next door neighbour bought granadas after driving my parents.

Look at how boring the astra and the golf were compared to the focus. The focus had a very differnt suspension set up compared to the other cars.

Voted focus, I'm only 24 but had a mk1 and got a mk2 now and just love it. When me n mates have gone on trips its always been my focus used and its a 3dr over my mates 5dra astras!

if they had introduced the mk3 mondeo to replace the sierra i think it would have been massive, they diodn't exactly drop the ball with the mki1/2 but when the mk3 came along it was so much more

Since I'm of the latter generation I vote Focus too. Received praise from loads of different people for what it was and it still is one of the best complete hatchbacks around imo.

never set the sales figures alight the corsair back in the day and my dad had a escort van made in 1956 also called the squire and his company had a fleet of them but only seen one on the road in my life at classic ford 9 years ago

Shame about the Corsair, as I had 3 in short succession, the pre-crossflow 1500, a slightly later 1.7 V4, and then a 2.0 V4 GT ESTATE. Rare as you like the estate in GT guise, but I scrapped it due to rot.
I remember the Squire, as it looked like a Prefect!

im going for escort over the sierra as standard no sport sierras looked poo. escorts looked good base models to rs's and there just cool had so many over the years mk1-6 brilliant i like mk1/2 fiestas too but cant vote fiesta just for them

My father Inlaw has a squire with a v6 Essex engine tucked away in one of his garages.
I haven't seen it move in the 15 years I've known him so cant say for sure but I'm sure they were based on the old 100e Anglia thingamy jig
The missus has a picture of it somewhere so il see if I can find it.

Completely agree, my first car was a 1.3 MK2 and when I was 18 my second car was a MK1 RS2000. What a car

To me there is something very special about Mk1 and MK2 RS models (and the Mk1 twin cam !), IMO it's a shame they went on to cheapen and dilute the RS name.

Glen my personal opinion was the escort and sierra would storm ahead in voting due to all the forms of models available, but for me the escort gets it for very long production run it had compared to the sierra

longer than that matey as first ford to wear a badge with escort on it was made in 1955 and ran to 1961 then they relaunched name in 1968 and ran to 2000 although plenty of late registered cars/vans out there wearing a 01/02 plate

er sorry not having that mondeos are great all round cars and and are more reliable then any old ford my st24 never ever has let me down and would drive to the moon and back with no hassle

my st looks great and is a great all round family car huge boot to as are all mondeos

not to say its sells more and more every year and will out last the sierra
