Default Strange issue with 2.0 blacktop zetec petrol

Put up a post yesterday or so i thought i cant find it now.

I bought this mondeo mk3 the other week it drove 15 miles home fine, it was parked up for a few days while i sold my other car. Sold my other car went to use it, started fine, drove it down to see a friend last night about 8 mile away was fine all the way there. On the way back i give it some and I couldnt get it to go above 80mph/4000 revs? It lost power but it kept going at around 50/60 then when i slowed for the roundabout and went to accelerate off it it just died on me? It started up straight away but then when i went to pull off it just started spluttering and backfiring into the inlet manifold (could hear it popping away) then conked out again. Eventually managed to get it the half mile home, popping and banging, misfiring, backfiring etc.

Got it home went out this morning and it started fine drove fine etc? The coilpack was knackered on it it wouldnt start before as i bought it spares repairs and there was a shit load of unburnt fuel in the exhaust when i started it as it smoked like fuck for ages then cleared, im just wondering if its knackered the CAT , eitherway the brick in the CAT was loose so i took the CAT off earlier and smashed the brick out of it lol.. theres no bulb in the engine managment light but its not showing any fault codes?

Would knackered CAT cause the issues im having? by smashing the brick out im hoping ive solved it but I feel i dont want to take it out incase it goes on me again

yeah a blocked cat would cause them symptoms ,had the same on a cougar when the owner used 2 cans of carb cleaner to clean the secondary throttle plates this knackered the cat and wouldnt rev over 4000 or drive over 40mph. took ages to work out what was wrong

Thats a good sign then. Took the cat off as i say and the insides were loose the guy had been trying to start it for about 2 weeks with a knackered coilpack hoping one morning it would fire up. Hoping the problem doesnt come back, just sounds tinny as hell now with no brick in the cat but its got a yrs MOT and was only a few hundred quid so not bothered lol
