Turbo gone! Upgrade t3 or go t34??
My seals in the turbo have started to go and is smoking a lot now.
I have a sapphire cosworth 2wd on yellows running stage 1 at around 250bhp. I may go to green, 3bar etc at a later date.
My question is
Should I upgrade my t3 by getting it rebuilt to a hybrid stage 2 or should I get a old t34 and do the same?
I use the car as a daily driver and I'm quite used to the t3 now and would like a little more punch. So would the t34 be ok for daily driving use?
Plus another question is how much boost is ok to run on standard heads bolts? At the mo I'm running 16psi.
Thanks

if you want to stay with the t series turbos and it to be a direct fit then go with a t34 on a 0.48 housing, with greens you will hit 300 hp easy without running to much boost.

From my experience as I had a 2wd sapph on a t34.63 and a modified t3 on my 3dr.
A t34.63 or t34.48 only makes sense over a t3 setup if you are looking for 370hp+. Using light blues or higher as the 803s = Dark greens will hold back the full potential of the t34 turbo, due to delivery rate.
Most people havent experienced a t3 when its peaking almost 2 bar, they are torquey punchy little foookers but run out of puff up top end. Great for A road racing though.
Suppose it depends on your driving style , as said above the t34.48 is the best fast road setup but don't run it on greens.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.
So my mind is starting to go for the t34 if I do go down that road It should be ok on yellows for now? Plus cos I'm not really going to go past 300ish at a later date it will be no point going for a .63

Still keen by the looks then Danny
Its a great question in my eyes the T3/T34 choice. I love an early punch which suits most of my driving and always wonder if a 34 would upset that and become sort of unusable until you get on some decent lengths of road of course. I guess its your style and surrounding you have to consider to get the best from your spec.

i think a t3 is a waste on a yb, ive had 2 and they were both puchy as hell but proper dead at the top end.
ive run a t34 on a 0.63 on greens at 24 psi no issues with fueling and it got abused constantly no issues.
t34 .48 would be the one, look at rsmats dyno plot loads of low end power, still strangled up top imo but still makes 400 hp and similar torque.

I went down this route last year, started modding my ageing Saff after running it at stage 1 (280) for 10 years.
If you want to do it 'properly' bear in mind you'll need injectors, map sensor, turbo, bigger intercooler, breather system etc. It adds up but I sourced most of mine used for good prices.
The result? 347bhp. Transformed the car (made me smile and swear a lot) and the mid-range pull on it from 50 upwards is incredible. Out-dragged a Caterham R300 and a GT3 on a track day much to my surprise.

From what you lot have said looks like the way is the t34.
So far I've got not fitted yet a airtec 500 style intercooler, some greens that didn't cost anything as a friend has upgraded and that's it so far. All not fitted as I'm saving for a wasted spark kit too and do it all in one hit and get it all set up. Plus anything else I need.
So if I go for a t34 it should be ok for my set up I have for now?
