Wasted spark systems have been around for quite some time.
A wasted spark ignition system does away with distributors and single coils.

However, wasted spark set up is 20+ year old technology. Coil on plug is far superior in every way. I believe all performance vehicles come with coil on plug these days.

I was forced to use a wasted spark on my 4 cylinder turbo as the management system had only 2 ignition outputs. Also the wasted spark systems do not require a camshaft trigger.
