at top speed?

Was reading a few posts and was wondering this, a saph's top speed is 150 when it left the factory right? well if you had a say stage 3 setup and sat at 150 how long before it went bang? or should it last forever as long as fuel was good?

It would depend on how good the mapping is in the chip!
The piston crowns would get very hot on a weak map and would no doubt melt before long!

ok say the map is very good (one of Stu's?) and fueling was perfect? Would that mean you could sit there at 150 without problem or are there weak points in the engine that would fail?

If it was mapped correctly for top end and if the engine was in good order i would guess it would keep going until it ran out of fuel

I reckon the oil would get too hot and thin if you held it for ages!

Doesn't the manual say something like "max continuous rev/min 6500" ?

That would suggest that the engine can run at max revs continuously and reliably

I have had a stage 1 chipped car at 6500rpm on 17s for 6 miles (but this WAS in the days of the old 98RON).

My current car is mapped so that it could be held flat out for the length of Brunters twice in succession, on the third time round, there was the faintest hint of det (not sufficient to cause any problems or require any changes). However, I was told that if I went round a fourth time without letting it cool down, that some adjustments would be required on the top line (adding fuel / taking out ignition). Given that this equated to 170mph speeds, I left it as it was, as I couldn't imagine ever holding those speeds for any significant periods.

The problem that commonly arrises at these speeds is:

1) Heat build up in the head due to EGT.
2) Heat build up in engine due to inadequate cooling.
2) Heat build up in the piston and rod due to insuficient oil quantity.

As Far as mapping goes, the system is operfectly capable of requiring stable and safe fuel and spark strategies, its the rest of the vehicle that usually lets them down.

I know its far from standard and therefore irrelevant for this thread But I had martins Escort well over 150mph for a LONG while on the Gumball and we noticed the gearbox started to get very hot and was getting louder and louder so I slowed down for a bit!

What actually gets on in the gearbox, the oil?

Would it not be possible to somehow fit a gearbox oil cooler?
